Alipus XX San Miguel Anniversario from Don Felix Garcia was made with maguey Tobala (Agave potatorum) in San Miguel, Sola de Vega, Oaxaca. It is a single-batch to celebrate 20 years of Alipus.
Alipus Mezcal
Alipús was born in 1999, as a project of the Destilería Los Danzantes, with Don Joel Antonio and sons as the first producers, in San Juan del Río. Subsequently, Don Eduardo Hernández, of Santa Ana del Río, making Alipús Santa Ana mezcal; Don Cosme Hernandez and his son Cirilo in San Baltazar Guelavila, who make the Alipús San Baltazar mezcal; Don Valente Angel and sons, of Santa María La Pila, with the Alipús San Andrés mezcal. In 2013, Alipús San Luis was incorporated, made by Don Baltazar Cruz and sons, of San Luis del Río, and Alipús San Miguel, made by Don Felix García, Leonardo Rojas, and Tío Jesús in the Potrero Sola de Vega.

I picked up this bottle along with a Mezcalero special release #25 that was also a tobalá to taste side-by-side. Flavors have thinned out as the bottle has been open for several months. There is an underripe cherry flavor on the front end, some smoke mid palate that has a bit of burnt rubber, a tart apple, and a dry finish. Nothing from the clay that shows up. I remember when I first opened the bottle the flavors were sharper and more pronounced. Could be that the oxygen has made the mezcal less potent, but that has not been my experience with other bottles where the flavors get denser and richer as the bottle gets less liquid in it. I agree with Jonny’s and Tyler’s assessment that it is somewhat underwhelming. I did see a review on YouTube recently by Tequila Aficionado’s “Sipping Off the Cuff” and they raved about it calling it bright and peppery.

641 reviewsAromas of dirty clay and new rubber tires. This has got Sola de Vega written all over it but there is a chemical note which isn’t great. I had to scroll up to see which agave this was because I’m not detecting anything specific (to be fair I think Tobala varies quite a bit in flavor). Slight heat which leaves a coating on your tongue. Some decent minerality and notes of vanilla soft serve ice cream. Gets a bit better as you sip it but doesn’t stack up to some of the other Sola de Vega releases I’ve enjoyed in the past.

Notes of slate, dried prunes, figs, and a little diesel. I was super excited to try this one, but it’s unfortunately not my favorite. I tasted this alongside a Vago Ensamble en Barro from Tio Rey and the Vago below this one away (at about half the price). I’d honestly prefer the regular Alipus en Barro release over this one as well.
