Balam Churique

Balam Churique is distilled from the small and rare Agave Lechugilla, which is known for its lettuce-like structure and appearance.

About this destilado de agave

Balam Churique is distilled from the small and rare Agave Lechugilla. In certain regions, it can take up to 30 years for this agave to mature. This particular Churique is made in Madera, Chihuahua.

Balam

Balam Raicilla and Sotol was launched in 2016 by Xavier Villagran. He has taken careful consideration to find raicilleros that were previously not commercializing their raicilla, which has a reputation of being the moonshine of Mexico. Balam was the second brand of raicilla to legally enter the United States market. Villagrán sources artisanal spirits: mezcals in Oaxaca, raicilla in each of the three distilling regions of Jalisco (costa, sierra, llano), sotols from Chihuahua and Durango, and the rare churique from the tiny agave lechugilla.

Lot: BCH-11-19
Nose – Earthy soil. Ginger root. Garden celery. Subtle cake frosting sweetness.

Palate – Lemon zest. Rock candy. Jasmine. Bamboo shoots. A tasty, potent sotol although a little bit of a soapy note in there. Not a deal breaker though.

This was 1.5 oz. sample by mezcal reviewer and King of the Matatlan Strip, Rahkal. 😎

Bottle number 173, batch BCH-11-19
The experience of this was like standing downwind on a cold mountaintop next to a raging fire of elderwood. An ancient forest creature gave me a bite of unripe green olive and green peppercorns, and then shoved a dusty steel pipe in my mouth and laughed. The finish is about as long and winding as i-80 across the US, and has many of the same strange characteristics. It is a whole mouth experience, and nothing is out of place. Every time I open the bottle i go deeper and deeper into the flavors and smile because it’s just so weird and good.

Lot BCH-11-19. When I first opened this bottle my initial impression was that it was a bit sour and funky and nothing special, but after getting some oxygen it really changed into something delicious! Made by the legendary Bienvenido Fernandez this Mezcal is sweet, earthy, woody and floral with some really complex and delicious flavors. Garden soil, dark Muscovado sugar, chocolate malt balls, oak, bamboo, lotus blossoms, and candied coconut. Very tasty.
