Banhez Mezcal is a co-operative comprised of 35+ families in the tiny village of San Miguel Ejutla in the central valley of Oaxaca. The Banhez Mezcal co-op is committed to sustainable, fair trade mezcal production the same way it’s been done by their ancestors for nearly two centuries. The Banhez Ensamble is made by the collective and the brand also has single agave varietals produced by a single mezcalero from the co-op.

Palate – The most memorable part of the palate was the watery, bitter and weak ethanol in the finish. It tasted like too much tails/colas made it’s way through. I wanted much more for this price point.
This was a 1 oz sample at Santo Mezcal in Santa Barbara.

Jabali is notoriously difficult to work with so they get an extra half star from me for the effort. Flavors are all there just subtle (as Jabali in my experience tends to be). Sweetness, gentle smoke, lightly herbal but it was the lactaic note and a burnt caramel quality that really stood out to me. Unique and a great conversation starter for hardcore mezcal enthusiasts but perhaps a bit overkill considering the price point at $120. There are some mezcals out there that will blow your mind at this price point and much less.

Could be the most complex from the Banhez line, as well as one of my favorite from them (Cuishe is up there). 103 reviewsTasted this with Tahona Bar’s Steven during virtual covid-craziness. I have never had jabali maguey before. It was very intersting–in a good way. Aroma was fresh with little smoke. Taste was incredible with pine-needles tingling my mouth. Finish was good.
