About this mezcal

Banhez Mexicano is made with maguey Mexicano (Agave rhodacantha) in La Noria Seccion 13, Ejutla, Oaxaca. This mezcal is produced by Luis Pacheco, whose family is very well known in the region for their mezcal production.

Banhez Mezcal

Banhez Mezcal is a co-operative comprised of 35+ families in the tiny village of San Miguel Ejutla in the central valley of Oaxaca. The Banhez Mezcal co-op is committed to sustainable, fair trade mezcal production the same way it’s been done by their ancestors for nearly two centuries. The Banhez Ensamble is made by the collective and the brand also has single agave varietals produced by a single mezcalero from the co-op.

Really enjoyed the Tobala from this mezcalero (Luis Pacheco). Unfortunately this Mexicano is not doing it for me. There are a lot of charred sour notes. Like charred wood and some of the gusano notes you get from cheap gusano mezcal. Sour peach candy. Burnt ends but only the black crust. I think people into “smoke bomb” mezcals might like it. Batch from 07/2019, bottle 116/114.

I rated another Maguey Mexicano mezcal recently which was also not great, however that was off putting whereas this is just unenjoyable. What is the difference?! Anyway, reviews are hard sometimes.

Brown sugar, wet cardboard, pineapple upside down cake, canned pears in syrup, cinnamon. Sweet in a good way.

Gun powder and pepper (smell of gun cleaner too), but well balanced. If anything maybe a bit too much heat at the finish. I’m still up in the air about my personal preference to mexicanos, and this one certainly didn’t improve, or lower, my ‘indecisiveness’ on this particular agave type. 3.75

Lot B0001ME4919
Sweet at first, sits nicely on the palate. Coats really well, lots of complexity. Notes of apple, pear, some prickle of heat. The agave is front and center, lots of wood smoke, a good deal of sweetness and a good bit of minerality.

I like this. It isn’t my favorite Mexicano, but it has tons going on and does a really good job integrating a whole lot of flavor and smoke without becoming one noted.

Nose: Vegetal, fresh cut greens, roasted peppers, raspberry sweetness, light blueberry.

Palate: Medium mouthfeel. Vegetal, peppers, steamed greens, light campfire smoke, tartness, light minerality, brine.

Finish: Medium length, warm. Strong Vegetalness, light smoke, tartness.

This is a good release. It is one of the most green/vegetal forward mezcals I have tried but that is a good thing. It’s a little one note in its vegetalness but overall I like the savoriness that it commands. It is brought down a little by being so one note but still a good release from Banhez.
