About this mezcal

Borroso – Javier Mateo is made with agave Espadin. These agave are cooked in an underground pit oven, mashed by horse-drawn tahona, fermented in open-air for 8 days, and double distilled in copper stills. There are two different releases of this mezcal from Javier Mateo. One release is at 49% ABV and the other is at 42% ABV. The 42% ABV release is cut with spring water to bring down the proof.

Borroso Mezcal

The name Borroso, which means “blurred”, represents the surreal experience of drinking mezcal, which can transport the consumer to a state of daydreaming where they focusing beyond the intellectual. Each lot of Borroso is made in an artisanal way, at family owned palenques throughout Oaxaca. Borroso, located in Baja California, is a négociant that works with smaller mezcaleros that are not able to bottle and distribute on their own. They are commited to preserving wild agave species, so they work almost exclusively with agave Espadín.

Medium to thick mouth feel. Rich, peppery, lots of clay. Creamy sweetness before some string bean, smoky wood notes and charcoal make their way in.
