About this destilado de agave

Chacolo Brocha is made with maguey Brocha (agave Angustifolia), a varietal related to Espadin. This agave takes approximately 7 years to mature with an additional 3 years capon. The agave are cooked in an underground oven and milled by hand with axes. Once cooked and milled, the agave are fermented naturally in wooden tinas with mountain spring water. Finally, they are double distilled in a Filipino style still.

Chacolo

The Partida family, lead by Don Macario, has been making their iconic “mezcales” for 5 generations in Zapotitlan de Vadillo, Jalisco, however due to legalities they can neither call their product mezcal nor tequila. They are renowned among mezcaleros and mezcal aficionados for the amazing spirits that are meticulously made from the 15 different agave varietals that they have been collecting from their region for three generations. These varietals include 14 A. angustifolia sub varietals and 1 A. rhodacantha sub-varietal.

Review #112: The nose has cream, vanilla, sweet florals, sweet mint, sweet potato, and buttered bread.
The palate is very noticably thick and oily. It has cream, sweet potato, milk chocolate, mint, caramel, bit of butyric, vanilla, sweet florals, mint, honey, and chlorine.

Wow, I’ll start by saying that the palate is very cool. One of the most oily that I have had. It is what really kept me pulled in because the aromas and flavors were pretty delicate. It had this unique potato and bread thing going on that I really enjoyed, but it also is a bit simplistic in flavor in ways too. Either way, I still like the lighter stuff going on here alongside this thick creamy palate.

This is one delicious pour! Nose is smoked mint and pure sugar. Delightful.

Many flavors present but definitely sweet mint, black pepper and brioche. The finished results leave a warm feeling not unlike being in the forest after a warm rain, absolutely excellent.

Expensive but I will eventually buy another bottle because this is a such great tasting Mezcal. A solid representation of how complex Angustifolia flavors can be. A+!

Lot 4, April 2018, bottle 117 of 800.

This one is different. Before tasting I’d read there was mint. But I didn’t imagine it would be too pronounced; mint is there in Del Maguey’s Chichicapa but I always found that subtle. But here, there is definitely mint, especially when the bottle is first opened.

It wasn’t until the third or fourth tasting that I got my brain dialed in to the mint and started to enjoy this one. But once there, it’s really rather excellent. Previously I’d had it alongside other agave spirits but I think it needs to be drunk solo to really get properly acclimated. And it’s not just mint — there’s a lot more going on. Herbal, sweet, a lovely rich mouthfeel. Definitely a cool agave spirit to have in the collection.

Chacolo Brocha 48.3% Dec. 2017 batch

Nose: Sweet mint that’s ice cream like. Lime. Smells like a mojito.Potato chips.

Palate: Good mouth feel. Vanilla bean, peppermint, and a hint of lime.

Finish: I like this finish. Good length with lots of mint.I love good mint notes. Fries and mint ice cream.

Overall: I’m a fan of this. Not super complex, but the profile really jives with me.

Nose – Pine wood sap. Some pine smoke (like having a Christmas tree burning event in the distance).

Palate – More pine sap. Junior mints. Roasted yams. Thin mouthfeel. Martini olive. Dry finish with a nice smoky flavor. A tasty mezcal but not mind-blowing for me.

Lot 3 Vol 3A. Pine needles, dried thyme, York Peppermint Patties, black pepper, Dragonwell green tea, and a salty green olive brine finish. A well made, unique Mezcal. I really dig this brand and I hope to visit them some day and try all of their Angustifolia’s.

Mint mint mint! Maybe some chocolate and turbinado too. Viscous on the mouthfeel, but not overwhelming in flavor or bite. An absolute winner imo

Another twist and turn of direction! Really broad on the palate, certainly some mint as mentioned in the other review here. Behind the mint it a really interesting herbal complexity, I can’t tell if it’s more medicinal or food-like. Terrific weight on the palate. I fucking love it!

Vol 3. Herbal nose with medicinal qualities of natural mystic healing. Aromas of spearmint, moringa, and peppermint. Smells like white Canada mints. More fresh mint on the palate with a bit of sugary molasses and sweet potato. Thick on the palate. Long finish.
