CLAN55 Espadin

CLAN55 is a high-ABV (55%) handcrafted agave Espadin mezcal produced once a year in Santa María Quiegolani, Oaxaca.

About this mezcal

CLAN55 is a handcrafted agave Espadin mezcal produced once a year in Santa María Quiegolani, Oaxaca. Production occurs mostly between the month of February and April when the agaves reach maturity after 8 years. Given the strong ABV (alcohol by volume) of 55%, the batches are inherently “small batch” since the spirit isn’t being diluted with water; adding water increases a batch size. This mezcal has intensive herbal and flowery notes.

Since 2017, CLAN55 decided to eliminate the name of a single person as their mezcalero. The makers consider every single person involved in the process important to the result of each batch.

CLAN55 Mezcal

Mezcal CLAN55 regularly produces limited editions which do not exceed 100 liters in addition to their handcrafted agave Espadin mezcal. Those editions are made entirely of wild agaves, with the age of the plants between 12-30 years.

This mezcal is a true gun. Would serve well to the one that knows how to use it .
Yes the product has changed from batch to batch but that only reflects the organic grow process of the product.
This nice video can paint a good honest picture about the location (Quiegolani- Hi lands), the raw product and the beautiful traditional process of its production.

Oh yeah and the Tasting notes,
welcoming herbal, pepper, light acetone, light smoke
In taste generous and balanced with greater smoke that when first perceived in the nose.
Gentle but persistent oily slowly fade out as the fine cooked agave profile fades.

The first time I tried this was at Tentacion Mezcalothek in Berlin. Despite the ABV it held the flavors very well. I bought a 20cl bottle to enjoy over the holidays and it was of great comfort to me and my travel companion during our trip. It had the earthy agave-forward flavors found in quality agave Espadin mezcals; these newer batches are from Santa María Quiegolani. Later, I picked up an older bottle elsewhere in Europe before heading home (Lot SJR08 from San Juan del Rio) and was disappointed when trying it for the first time. It tastes very different than my initial experience. The flavors are sour and metallic – there is also more burn from the alcohol. The burn still isn’t too much for 55% ABV but its not pleasant. I’d try this brand again but hope for better consistency in the future.

Lot SJR08. Tough to drink…..lots of alcohol on the nose….aromas of nail polish, cleaning chemicals, and new rubber…..The palate is challenging….more notes of industrial cleaners, cocaine, and distilled potatoes….I generally enjoy puntas, but this doesn’t have a pleasant aspect to accompany the heat, it’s just hot.
