Código 1530 Mezcal Artesanal Joven is an ensamble made from Maguey Espadin (Agave angustifolia) and Maguey Tobala (Agave potatorum) in San Juan del Rio, Oaxaca. The agaves in cooked in a stone oven, crushed by tahona, and distilled in copper pots. The spirit is rested in Sauvignon Blanc wine barrels. Tasting notes include: vanilla, citrus, dark cherry, earth, stone, clay, and smoke.

Código 1530 is a tequila brand in which country legend George Strait is an investor. Federico “Fede” Vaughan is the CEO and co-founder. The brand was originally a private stock of tequila available only for friends and family. The brand ages certain releases of their tequila in French white oak Napa cabernet barrels. The logo bears the Jerusalem Cross which is a symbol of the brand. This cross sits atop the Jalisco Coat of Arms and dates back to 1530 when Amatitán was recognized as a city of New Galicia; Jalisco was given a coat of arms by the Spanish monarchy.
In 2022, French firm Pernod Ricard agreed to acquire a majority stake in Código 1530 for an undisclosed sum.

Nose: Tropical fruits, roasted agave, floral, and cut grass.
Pallet: A strong anise-like taste that fades to agave and noticeable smoke that lingers.

This mezcal is not not bad. Aroma is medium smoke with some sweetness and light fruit. Taste is solid with medium viscosity and good flavors: some earthy sweetness. Finish is long and brings out most of the the good flavors but with a hint of bitterness.
