About this mezcal

Contraluz Mezcal Cristalino is sourced by mezcalero Don Carlos León Monterrubio from producers in the Tlacolula de Matamoros region of Oaxaca. Don Carlos transforms the joven Maguey Espadin (Agave angustifolia) mezcal into an aged cristalino. Originally, releases of this mezcal were aged for more than 12 months in American oak barrels and then filtered. As of 2022, the process involves resting the mezcal for 6 months in charred American oak barrels before being filtered through activated charcoal.

Contraluz debuted in Mexico in 2016 and arrived in the US in 2022 at $60 a bottle. Contraluz claims to be the world’s first cristalino mezcal. In 2022, Colombian singer Maluma (Juan Luis Londoño Arias) joined the Contraluz team as the face of the brand as it eyes expansion.

Contraluz Mezcal

Mezcal Contraluz claims to be “the only clear aged mezcal” and as of 2019, that seems to be true. Mezcal Contraluz is available in Mexico City other popular destinations in Mexico.

If all you care about is getting fucked up fast this is probably for you because it just tastes and feels like water but if you appreciate a sipper or anything agave spirits save yourself the brainpower. Was offered some so I tried it and man, I just don’t get why someone would do this. I only give this to people as a freebie when I want to show them what a terrible destilado tastes like. Thin, flat, flavorless aside from a metallic water taste. I actually let it sit in my glass for a while thinking it would open up and it actually just got flat believe it or not.
TOTC 2022 Casa Lumbre came down and threw a rooftop bash to celebrate their bringing this to our market and they were literally shooting this stuff out of water guns into people’s mouths. Do with that information what you will.

IMO, may be a good mixer, but for the price, better options out there that fill that purpose. This “innovation” of being a cristalino just strips the juice out of its potential richness and complexity. Feels thin and watered down, some smoke, no depth, vanilla notes come out, but maybe due to some additives present. Falls on the entry level mezcal section, but I would not recommend for sipping after getting used to higher proofs and better quality juice.

difficult to find (unfortunately) but man, is this stuff good. it’s quite mild compared to most mezcals, and it is short on ABV (35%) but my god it drinks very, very well. I love it.
