About this mezcal

Cráneo Organic Mezcal is a single village artisanal mezcal handcrafted by local maestro mezcaleros and agave aficionado David Ravandi in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca. Cráneo Organic Mezcal begins with hand selecting 100% organic agave grown at 5,600 ft. Harvested when fully matured, charred pit oven roasted piñas are then crushed by a stone tahona to extract the agave juice. Once natural fermentation occurs, small batches of Cráneo Organic Mezcal are distilled twice in copper pot stills. The skull depicted on their label was inspired by the Aztec Goddess Mictecacihuatl, the guardian of the bones, which symbolizes strength and influence.

Cráneo Mezcal

A classic cocktail mezcal, with heavy smoke and noticeable heat. Price point is a little steep compared to other options for cocktails. Cool label.

Pretty basic flavor profile. Alcohol and sour lime. Seems like I’m sipping the tails. Just had some cocktails and it still seems a bit hot. Didn’t catch the batch number. Sipped at The Eddy in Providence, Rhode Island.

Lot: 19-15284-CR-04
Aroma is lovely, bright jackfruit and desert asphalt roads. There’s definitely some vanilla, chaparral herbs, and more than a little campfire. Taste is on the sweet side, with nice peppery notes and a significant minerality comes into play that wasn’t there on the aroma. But on the finish, it all just sort of drops away and crashes, curiously. That might sound unpleasant or like a deal-breaker, but it really isn’t, and I think it’s just a shortcoming of the ABV. It’s still a nice sipper. If the ABV were about 5-7% more, this could be exceptional.

Lot No. 19-14566 CR-04
Nose: Citrus sweet – a tad of vanilla.

Palate: Rubber. Raw sugar. Heavy smoke profile but nice. Overall, it’s decent – slightly rough on finish.

This is a nice Espadin. Crisp and flinty, with notes of minerals and wet earth. A worthy sipper. Not sure what the story is with the Lot # on my bottle. 17-1815 is typed, with TXE-08 handwritten over it.

This is my everyday standby. Just wish the cork was a little more reliable. Bottle itself with artwork is pretty cool. Can enjoy in an elevated cocktail or can hold its own neat. Nothing but love in the bottle.
