About this mezcal
Cuentacuentos Espadin from Miguel Ángel Cruz Rios is produced in the community of Sola de Vega, Oaxaca. Once harvested, the agave is cooked for 72 hours in a traditional underground horno and then milled by hand with a wooden mallet in a canoe. It is then naturally fermented in 8-9 days and doubled-distilled in clay pots. Spring water is used to adjust the spirit to approximately 48% ABV.
Cuentacuentos
Cuentacuentos curates small-batch traditional mezcals and destilados de agave from producers across the state of Oaxaca. Cuentacuentos released its first 6 mezcal expressions in 2018; future releases from the brand will change over time and include non-certified mezcals. The logo and bottle artwork (by artist Cesar Ruiz Conseco) features an opossum or tlacuache in Spanish. The tlacuache on the logo is El Viejito, the little old man opposum who stole mezcal from the demons as a service to humanity. The tlacuache ranks with the jaguar, eagle, and burro in importance in Zapotec, Taina, and Mexican mythologies. The Cuentacuentos motto is Mezcal brings people together, stories make us friends.

118 reviewsLote ACR041-ESP Bottle 182/301 46.22% mezcalero Miguel Angel Cruz Rios. Sampled on 10/2024. Once in a while, a bottle comes along. That just changes your mind all about a agave species. I’ve always been a little disappointed with the espadin agave but this one’s completely different. Aromas out of the bottle are acetone candy with light. Smoke covering amazing fruit aromas of all different types. Some roasted some green and fresh like papaya. The flavors are such a amazing mix of just the right amount of light smoke. Mixed in with such, amazing fruits Papayas, mangoes, strawberries with that little bit of acetone over everything. More than anything, this reminds me of a very good Cupreata agave which is one of my favorites. And then there’s the mouth coating qualities, which just seemed to linger forever, carrying with it, roasted fruit and light smoke for a long time. This is one of the best deals in mezcal that i’ve come across in a long time.
