Cuentacuentos Tepeztate – Alejandrina Aragón Hernandez

Cuentacuentos Tepeztate is produced by Maestra Mezcalera Alejandrina Aragón Hernandez in a valley outside of Santa Maria Zoquitlán. This mezcal has notes of melon, tropical fruits and honey on the palate.

About this mezcal

Cuentacuentos Tepeztate is produced by Maestra Mezcalera Alejandrina Aragón Hernandez in her small palenque in a valley outside of Santa Maria Zoquitlán. The unique microclimate of the area, combined with her mastery of the art of mezcal production, results in exceptional mezcals. The agave is cooked for 72 hours in a traditional underground horno and then milled by a horse drawn tahona. It is then naturally fermented in 6-8 days and doubled-distilled in copper pots. Spring water is used to adjust this spirit to 47% ABV. Alejandrina’s mezcal lightens the sweetness of agave Tepeztate, leaving notes of melon, tropical fruits and honey on the palate.

Cuentacuentos

Cuentacuentos curates small-batch traditional mezcals and destilados de agave from producers across the state of Oaxaca. Cuentacuentos released its first 6 mezcal expressions in 2018; future releases from the brand will change over time and include non-certified mezcals. The logo and bottle artwork (by artist Cesar Ruiz Conseco) features an opossum or tlacuache in Spanish. The tlacuache on the logo is El Viejito, the little old man opposum who stole mezcal from the demons as a service to humanity. The tlacuache ranks with the jaguar, eagle, and burro in importance in Zapotec, Taina, and Mexican mythologies. The Cuentacuentos motto is Mezcal brings people together, stories make us friends.

Only a lower score from because I’ve come to learn it’s a simple mezcal. Metallic lean is towards Copper + smoke

Like visiting the Anasazi ruins. Adobe is forward.
Burnt marshmallow but with the charred ash that is enjoyable.
Something racy in the flavor. Uplift of a good mezcal.

A quintessential mezcal. Many would be thrilled to have this. Full bodied. Well rounded it’s got just the right heat. A burnt cigar note anchors it from mid to finish.

Lot CCT27. Bottle 42/254. Smells like sour apples, mud, and wet leaves. How is this done in copper? Tastes a lot like clay or something single distilled with it’s earthiness. Very funky and bit tart. Not what I’d normally expect from a Tepextate, but totally unique.
