About this mezcal

This exported release of Mezcales Cuish Cuish was produced in August 2017 by Francisco Garcia León using maguey Cuish (Agave Karwinskii) in San Guillermo, Miahuatlán, Oaxaca. The agaves are cooked in an underground over and then crushed using a horse-drawn tahona. Next, it is fermented with well water in and native wild yeast in Montezuma cypress vats. Lastly, it is distilled twice in copper, partial refrescadera style, stills. The final distillate is adjusted using twice distilled well water and puntas.

Cuish Mezcales

Mezcales Cuish is made up of rural producers that are dedicated to the production and commercialization of traditional Oaxacan mezcal from different regions and agave varieties.

For many years, Mezcales Cuish has operated a mezcaleria in Oaxaca City a few blocks southwest of Mercado Benito Juarez. A second location was opened in Centro, Oaxaca. In 2019, the brand began exporting to the United States. Mezcal Reviews lists a mix of their exported releases along with Oaxaca releases requested by website members.

Very sweet for a Karwinskii. Grass, sugarcane and coconut, light smoke and vanilla nose. Strangely sweet. Great mouthfeel. I normally prefer clay pot distillations of karwinskii where the minerality kind of counters the woody, astringent notes. But this is one is very rich, balanced and nearly viscous.

Lote: Cuish-1, Bottle 319/600, ABV 48%

The nose is very faint on this batch, but the flavors at first are very green, typical of Karwinskii. The palate is herbal up front, with some vegetal overtones. Then there is spice, a bit of clove. On the back end some faint fruit notes like strawberry. Throughout there is a grassy note that lingers, but not unpleasant. Would consider buying another bottle from this mezcalero and a different batch.

I would like to find a bottle of this one and would like to try more Cuish offerings.

Nose: An intoxicating earthiness – wet soil and a humid, lush jungle.

Palate: The texture is amazing – very soft, pillowy mouth feel. Baking spice sweetness. The smoke seems dialed up in the finish and a bit bitter. Lingering aftertaste surprise of birthday cake sweetness. A very cool ride with this one!

Miahuatlán at its best : gentle, sweet, very well balanced. A great mezcal to start loving karwinskii.

I had a pour of this and enjoyed it thoroughly. Classic Karwinskii mineral-earthy flavors along with some sweet spice, clove, and a hint of bubblegum. I also enjoyed this particular US release batch more than the ones I’ve tried at the Cuish Mezcaleria.

Really nice Cuish from Cuish. I’ve tasted an agave Cuish mezcal at the Cuish mezcaleria in Oaxaca and wasn’t a big fan – you’d think the namesake agave would be awesome. However, this Cuish Cuish release is much more enjoyable. The aromas are amazing. There are some nice notes of dried fruit, grape juice, spearmint, and vanilla bean. If you enjoy agave Karwinskiis mezcals you will love this.

Had at Pujol, and the bought a bottle the next day at Sabra Dios in Mexico City. Perfectly balanced, juicy, and a dry type finish that doesnt linger too long. A treat
