About this mezcal

Del Maguey San Jose Rio Minas is made with agave Espadin. This Vino de Mezcal is meant to be a living example of the saying “You don’t find mezcal; mezcal finds you.” According to their story, Ron Cooper met Don Roberto while going down a canyon lush with wild agaves in the middle of nowhere. He was out deer hunting with some friends many hours on foot from their village. They were told about the village of Rio Minas, and Don Roberto passed them a half-liter plastic water bottle with an incredible mezcal inside. This mezcal has a bright sweet nose of papaya and ripe peaches, which gives way to a lightly sweet and floral palate.

Del Maguey Mezcal

Del Maguey (pronounced ma–gay), Single Village Mezcal was founded in 1995 by internationally renowned artist and Mezcal visionary, Ron Cooper. Ron introduced the world to previously unavailable 100% certified organic, artisanal Mezcal produced the original handcrafted way. Through deep cultural relationships with Zapotec Mexican Indian producers in the remote villages of Oaxaca, Mexico, Del Maguey harnesses ancient, original organic processes. Combining these methods with varying micro-climates and terroir gives each creation its own unique, rich, sweet and smoky character. Every product in their collection is made by individual family palenqueros (producers) in old-style villages. They are the first producer to credit each product after the village where our liquid is made. When you see their beautiful green bottles you know it’s Del Maguey. Most of Del Maguey’s mezcals are distilled to proof, so the ABV will vary slightly between batches.

In June of 2017, international spirits company, Pernod Ricard, purchased majority stake in the company. Del Maguey is now part of their portfolio that includes Jameson Whiskey, Absolute Vodka, and Havana Club Rum.

I got to try it this weekend, and I think this mezcal is an interesting one. The nose has floral and fruit notes like orange and jasmine. There is a slight hint of salt and smoke. On the other hand, I think the palate is less impressive even though it is as fruity as the nose, with a slight after-taste of thyme or rosemary. On both the nose and the palate, there is just an echo of smoke, it feels almost like an infusion. I will not say it is the best mezcal that I have ever tried, but it is somehow enjoyable.

Lot Rio-141. A lot of smoke. Black pepper, thyme, artichoke, raspberry. Short finish, no complexity.

From Mezcal Masterclass – Espadin at Todos Santos.

No tasting notes I remember, but this was hands down my favorite Espadin.

Incredible nose of papaya but disappointing on the palate. The glass I tried had a prominent taste of rubber with a chemical finish. I was surprised and had my girlfriend give it a sip.. she agreed that it had artificial flavors. This was a rare disappointment for me from Del Maguey, however I will try it again and hope for a better batch.
