About this mezcal

Del Maguey San Pedro Taviche is a limited edition mezcal made in a remote mountain valley of Ocotlan, Oaxaca. Taviche gets is unique flavor from the blending of magueyes: Espadin, Tobala, Tobasiche, and Tepextate. The earth roasted hearts are ground by two men using giant mallets, fermented naturally by airborne microbes, and distilled slowly twice in a tiny 150 liter copper still. Taviche has many layers of dried sweet fruit (dates and raisins), hazelnuts, sweet cedar and a hint of standing in a chocolate mist. In the background are dark herbaceous hints of dried tarragon and a bit of nutmeg.

Del Maguey Mezcal

Del Maguey (pronounced ma–gay), Single Village Mezcal was founded in 1995 by internationally renowned artist and Mezcal visionary, Ron Cooper. Ron introduced the world to previously unavailable 100% certified organic, artisanal Mezcal produced the original handcrafted way. Through deep cultural relationships with Zapotec Mexican Indian producers in the remote villages of Oaxaca, Mexico, Del Maguey harnesses ancient, original organic processes. Combining these methods with varying micro-climates and terroir gives each creation its own unique, rich, sweet and smoky character. Every product in their collection is made by individual family palenqueros (producers) in old-style villages. They are the first producer to credit each product after the village where our liquid is made. When you see their beautiful green bottles you know it’s Del Maguey. Most of Del Maguey’s mezcals are distilled to proof, so the ABV will vary slightly between batches.

In June of 2017, international spirits company, Pernod Ricard, purchased majority stake in the company. Del Maguey is now part of their portfolio that includes Jameson Whiskey, Absolute Vodka, and Havana Club Rum.

Surprisingly complex ensamble! A bit muted nose, but pleasant with vibrant vegetables/herbal notes. The complex flavour palette is the interesting aspect here, a great example of how unexpectedly well different agave profiles suddenly merge into something quite unique. On the palate this is a very nicely balanced mix of lime/limestone/quince of tobalá, toffee from espadin, rough nuts and wood from Karwinskii and herbal/vegetal qualities from tepextate. Illegible lot number, unfortunately, but try it if you see the it!

Green on the nose with citrus. Orange peel, spice, agave and metallic on the palate.
A little bit hot on the finish, but still a nice mezcal.

A rare ensamble from Del Maguey. Really enjoyed this the first time I tried it at Sal Muera in Amsterdam. The bottle I ended up purchasing later was Lot TAV-131 and it is decent but not as good as the initial experience (didn’t catch the batch number). The first experience had a perfect balance of agaves Tobala and Tepextate whereas this version is a bit muddled – it’s an old bottle too. There is a lot of charred citrus fruit and banana as another reviewer noted. There is a sour copper finish that isn’t the best, but overall an interesting mezcal.

Wanted to try an ensamble as i don’t often try them and they seem super interesting. This one was San Pedro Teviche Lot TAV-161, all wild agaves with Espadin, Tepeztate, Tobala, Tobaziche. Went with this one because of the tobala and I was very impressed, super smooth, and really enjoyed it. Set a high bar for all the tastings I tried after this one.

Lot TAV-131. Super clean on the nose with light hints of cumin and green peppers. The taste is robust with notes of burnt orange peel, ground nuts, pineapple rind, and plantains. This is a little hot, but it’s still VERY good.
