About this mezcal

Del Maguey Tobala & Espadin is made in the lush, remote mountains of Santo Domingo Albarradas. It has a tropical micro-climate resulting in a high, light nose with a rich mineral, herbaceous taste and a long, dry, smooth finish. This rare mezcal is a blend of two individually distilled mezcals. It is fifty-eight percent maguey Tobala and forty-two percent maguey Espadin. This release was limited to 260 six-bottle cases and only available in Europe.

Del Maguey Mezcal

Del Maguey (pronounced ma–gay), Single Village Mezcal was founded in 1995 by internationally renowned artist and Mezcal visionary, Ron Cooper. Ron introduced the world to previously unavailable 100% certified organic, artisanal Mezcal produced the original handcrafted way. Through deep cultural relationships with Zapotec Mexican Indian producers in the remote villages of Oaxaca, Mexico, Del Maguey harnesses ancient, original organic processes. Combining these methods with varying micro-climates and terroir gives each creation its own unique, rich, sweet and smoky character. Every product in their collection is made by individual family palenqueros (producers) in old-style villages. They are the first producer to credit each product after the village where our liquid is made. When you see their beautiful green bottles you know it’s Del Maguey. Most of Del Maguey’s mezcals are distilled to proof, so the ABV will vary slightly between batches.

In June of 2017, international spirits company, Pernod Ricard, purchased majority stake in the company. Del Maguey is now part of their portfolio that includes Jameson Whiskey, Absolute Vodka, and Havana Club Rum.

Warm like butter and lemons, sweet and smooth, but not in a bland way, rather a delectable and shocking way.

Tried this at a mezcal vendor in Mercardo Benito Juarez in Oaxaca City, and am a bit sad I didn’t bring a full bottle home. Too many bottles in my suitcase as it was. :/

Delicious.
Fruity without being overly sweet – pineapple, mango, earthiness, some smoke and a light pepper kick – very complex and full of flavour but still light and super smooth. Smells great too!
They should probably revisit this one. As others have said, you could sip it all day… if you could find a big enough bottle.

Wow, seems I got lucky here in Australia! Decided on a blend mainly for price I was blown away with this mezcal. Fruit, rich tastes, full flavour and a stickiness that reminds me of mangoes on a hot summer day. Lick your lips. A touch of leather, a hint to smoke and the 49% ABV only shows at the beginning leaving a smooth back palate. I’m with Tyler on this one – an all-day sipper. This bottle definitely an endangered species in this house as it suits all tastes. Label shows only 260 six-bottle cases made. Thank you Del Maguey. (A note for US tasters – this bottle cost $AUD165. A Del Maguey 100% Tobala Single Village Mezcal – $AUD225 – May 2019)

This mezcal really surprised me. It’s a blend rather than an ensamble. The tobala flavors are very rich and backed by very graceful espadin notes. It’s 58% tobala and 42% espadin blended after distillation. The flavors here are warm and intense without a bite. This is one you could sip all day (for better or worse). Very rare and only released in Europe – if you see it, try it.

If you see this, I highly recommend that you try it. Most of this release is long gone by now, so you’re lucky if you can find some. It’s full and round in the mouth and it has strong tasting notes of orange, papaya, green grape, and pineapple. This stuff is hand to find, but absolutely amazing.
