Derrumbes Oaxaca

Derrumbes Oaxaca is cooked in an underground stone pit using black oak to give a light smokiness, which complements the maguey Espadin.

About this mezcal

Derrumbes Oaxaca is made with maguey Espadin (ands sometimes maguey Tobala). The agave is cooked in an underground stone pit using black oak to give a light smokiness, which complements the mineral and fruit notes of the Espadin from which it is crafted. The fermentation is naturally aided by the addition of pulque from the agave Americana before wild yeasts complete the 72-hour process. Derrumbes Oaxaca is twice-distilled in copper pot stills, the resulting liquid is 48% ABV. It is rested for 60 days in large glass containers.

Derrumbes Mezcal

From Oaxaca to Michoacan and beyond, Derrumbes bottles many varieties of mezcal that are made using different agave and production methods. They have spirits from different states in Mexico, and they bottle some very small producers that are not available elsewhere.

LOTE A9 June 2020, BOTELLA 2592T, 46.4%, 200ml

Nose – Dirty, musky, and chalky; soil, dirt, wet asphalt. And something subtly sweet; tamarind, dry-erase marker.

Palate – A rich, dark and fruity flavor. Grapes, plums, cough syrup.

Finish – The deep flavors intensify; red wine, dark chocolate.

Decent sipper, especially if you’re trying to avoid something sweet and citrusy. This is deep, dark, and bittersweet. As if a Mezcal was reposado’d in a red-wine barrel.

Lote 12, 02/22 production date, bottle 4961/5800, 46.4% abv

Review #9: sweet and bright, raspberry, lemon and lime juice, minerals, ashy smoke. A bit brash overall. It has a bit too much heat on it for the abv. Also a light mouthfeel. My least favorite among the derrumbes lineup

Lot 7
Easily my least favorite from the Derrumbes line. Ashy, dry erase marker, acetone smells. The flavor profile basically tastes like that with just a touch of citrus/floral element on the finish. Would be lower if not for that finish. Wouldn’t recommend.

Lot A9 bottle 2592 date 6/20 46.4% Aromas out of the bottle are soft smoke and ripe stone fruit. Flavors are soft and smooth pink candy flavors creamy with some fireplace. Very easy to drink love this style. Just nothing outstanding or wrong with this one.

Lot 7, Bottle 209/400 03/2018
Updating review after finishing bottle. Definitely tasted higher proof, was a little hot. The smoke was rather light, did not get the anise note I had from a pour I had last year. It was still a pleasant sipper.

LOTE: A9 BOTELLA: 2592T FECHA: 06-20
Nose – Extinguished camp fire. Citrus fruit.

Palate – Cherry gummy bear at first but blink and you miss it. I like the mouth feel (coats nice). Mucho salt rock licks. I taste every bit of the 46% ABV heat – smoking rubber finish and aftertaste. No sign of the tobala in this. Not the worst mezcal I’ve tried, but it’s still pretty rough.

Lot A9 (200 ml), 46.4% ABV
Oatmeal cookie, some butterscotch. Light, and don’t seem to get much of any espadin notes. Sweet and not abrasive at all at 46% ABV. Great value, but might make a cocktail with this first, and sip in a pinch (similar to a Banhez Ensamble).

Lot 8. 46.9% vol.
Nose is slightly sweet, hint of smoke, balanced and inviting. Taste is also slightly sweet, not very outstanding compared to the nose. What really shines is the finish, which reminds me of licorice.

I’m not entirely sure if I’m imagining this, but I might have picked up a more slightly stronger yeasty nose than the average mezcal (in a positive sense).

This mezcal grew on me after a few tries.

Lot 6. I had really low expectations after reading the reviews but Lot 3 is very good! Oatmeal cookies, french vanilla, lavender, violet liqueur, and fresh cream. This is almost a five star for me considering the price.

The negative reviews here are a total mystery.

Granted, I’m very new to the world of mezcal. Recently, my brother bought two bottles for a vacation: Derrumbes (Oxaca), here, and Illegal (Joven). The illegal tasted like really good tequila. Nothing more, nothing less.

This Derrumbes however, was like nothing I’ve ever tasted before. The smokiness reminded my of Laphroaig scotch and the high was like a full-body massage. Heavenly.

So far, of the four I’ve tasted since, none has been as enjoyable.

I like this! Thought it was a bit unremarkable when it was just espadin, but that touch of tobala really makes a difference. Good solid stuff

Lot 7, March 2018

Appearance: Perhaps a touch more viscous than the Tamaulipas.

Nose: Ethanol :/. Sharpie too, which I sometimes get from tobala. Orange oils and some mint, with smoke and a warm earth note. A few minutes later, the ethanol is going away, revealing violet candies (Italian) galore, with some grape Kool Aid too. Touches of French vanilla, because my mind impulsively searches for it in tobala, but more green watermelon notes and lots of lime. Those candy notes even have chalkyness, lmao.

Palate: Sharp concentrated entry that grows into too much heat. White pepper styled heat, and really drying on the way down as those violet candy and lime notes linger. Drinks like it’s 58%, not 48.

Lote 7, 47.5%
Nose: Hot, with cedar, lemon meringue, band-aid, vaguely floral (magnolia?), some mild soapiness and ash
Palate: Alcoholic and a touch cloying, with sweet cooked agave, lemon-lime syrup, dandelion, wet slate. Medium-full bodied.
Finish: Lime peel, cucumber, pickle, pruned hedges; some bitter ash late. Short length.

A very middle of the road profile. It’s balanced but no element really shines and the alcohol isn’t as well integrated as other bottles in the Derrumbes line.

Tasty espadin with a hint of tobala. Hints of butterscotch and citrus. Had a small taster of this one and wanted more. Priced well considering the nice flavors. Overall wish the tobala would stand out more considering it is 30% of the mix.

It’s a little sweet and ashy on the nose with hints of fruit. The wild agave and rich flavor of maguey comes through the initial taste, and the balance between the blended agave provides notes that bounce around the mouth. It’s somewhat light in texture and has some heat at the end.
