About this mezcal

Dixeebe Tobala is produced by Valentin Cortes in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca. The maguey Tobala (Agave potatorum) used in this mezcal are cooked in an underground pit oven, milled by tahona, and double distilled in a copper still.

Tobala was one of four Dixeebe mezcals released as part of the US launch in March 2022. Prior to arriving in the US, edition 1 was just 36 bottles and edition 2 was 90 bottles.

Dixeebe Mezcal

Dixeebe Mezcal (pronounced “dee-sh-bay”) is a project from Asis Cortes and his father, Valentin Cortes. Their family has been producing mezcal in the Santiago Matatlán region of Oaxaca for at least 180 years. The two of them are perhaps most well-known in Mexico and internationally for their previous work with Mezcal El Jolgorio and Nuestra Soledad. Asis and Valentin have now moved on from the Casa Cortes brands and are focused on Dixeebe, along with Asis’ brand in Durango: Origen Raiz. Asis and his father decided to launch Dixeebe as a way to reconnect with their past and support their traditions in the future. The brand launched internationally in March 2022 where it is sold in 375ml bottles. Asis had the idea of smaller bottles to make premium mezcal more accessible.

According to the Asis, Dixeebe is a ceremony of honor of respect and love, the purest thanks to culture, their tradition and their ancestors, a great veneration of liquid, a gift from the gods to men, and an offering from men to the gods. Very tasty Tobala, with sweet floral notes on the nose, tropical fruit flavors and citrus notes. Papaya, mint, and cooked agave sweetness. Mild smoke. Even at 51% the alcohol is balanced and not prominent. Enjoyed this expression.

Tasted with Asis in his hotel. It is wonderful! It’s earthy, sweet and smooth with a little methanol. The finish is very long and delicious.

Lote: DVCTO0519
Nose – Cherry cheesecake. Celery sticks.

Palate – Papaya. Hickory. Slightly lactic. Some light ethanol in the finish that knocks it down a peg. This was a 2 oz. pour maybe it needed to open up a bit more.

Edition 2 from 2019.
Softer than the Madrecuise and not quite as good (although close). I was lucky to sample those two back to back. Creamy and carries the sweet Tobala notes. Light greenness in there too. So far all the Dixeebe line seems to be delicious. 4.25 stars
Edition 3 (US import version)
Strong nose of citrus, and some orange peel. Smokier than the espadin I tried side by side, but better. Still a 4 star mezcal.

This is one tasty Tobala. This isn’t a fruit forward Tobala. The nose smells like you put your face into a bouquet of flowers, there are also notes of papaya. In the mouth it’s earthy, minerally, herbal with peppercorns.
