Don Amado Arroqueno

Don Amado Arroqueno is very smokey with lots of earthy notes. It’s soft and very easy to drink. This is a great agave from a reputable palenque.

About this mezcal

Don Amado Arroqueno is made with maguey Arroqueno (agave Americana) that is distilled in ceramic and bamboo pot stills. The aromas of this mezcal are of spice, pepper, and chili. It’s well balanced with a good deal of smokey and earthy flavor. At 46% ABV, this mezcal is very soft and easy to drink.

Don Amado Mezcal

Don Amado’s mezcaleros carefully handcraft all of their mezcals from 100% mature highland agave plants. After roasting the hearts of these premium agaves in wood-burning earthen pits, the plants’ treasured juices are distilled in traditional Oaxacan ceramic-and-bamboo pot stills. This unique distillation method gives Don Amado mezcals their distinctive smoky flavor and herbal bouquet, while proudly honoring a sixteenth-century production tradition native to the state of Oaxaca.

Nose – Leather. Cobblestone. Slight latex.

Palate – Pine wood. Honeydew melon. Wet stone. A bit of clay. Flavors just don’t jive together very well.

The nose is green papaya and ripe mango. It’s bright and fruity. The pallet is more tropical fruit pineapple and maybe coconut. The finish is a little bitter and a little sour like the mango wasn’t quite ripe after all. To me, the tropical fruit flavors are more reminiscent of a Cuishe than a smooth and vanilla Arroqueños I’ve had in the past

Boring. I agree there is some sweet potato and banana here, starchy. A little more ashen. Mineral. Tastes like other Minas arros.

This is earthy, smokie, smooth. A distinct cinnamon stick. Then a bite of chili pepper. Love this. Great sipper!

Lot 33. Slightly sour aromas and wet clay feel. Wild apples and fermented potatoes on the nose. I find this overly watery and thin on the palate with notes of orange peel and fresh dates. There’s a deep earthy funk on this that really takes over. This is more clay-forward than agave-forward, which is unfortunate given its Arroqueno.

There is a sweet potato quality to this clay-distilled mezcal. It has a note of Dr. Pepper sweet spice along with banana. Definitely an enjoyable drink but I’m having trouble finding the 15+ year old agave Arroqueño notes. The Arroqueño is there on the nose, but not in the juice. It’s almost too smooth from the clay distillation causing flavors to be lost. Lot 33
