About this mezcal

Don Amado Reposado is aged for six months in barrels that formerly held Pedro Domecq Mexican Brandy. This mezcal has notes of fresh lime, green olives, peppercorn, green tea, and minerals. The barrel aging gives it strong flavors of sweet oak and caramel .  It’s a bit honeyed and oily on the palate. This mezcal is a great option for experienced mezcal drinkers as well as beginners. The similarities between this and many tequilas make this a good stepping stone for traditional tequila drinkers. The ABV of this mezcal may vary by batch.

Don Amado Mezcal

Don Amado’s mezcaleros carefully handcraft all of their mezcals from 100% mature highland agave plants. After roasting the hearts of these premium agaves in wood-burning earthen pits, the plants’ treasured juices are distilled in traditional Oaxacan ceramic-and-bamboo pot stills. This unique distillation method gives Don Amado mezcals their distinctive smoky flavor and herbal bouquet, while proudly honoring a sixteenth-century production tradition native to the state of Oaxaca.

Nose – Light Mandarin orange, toffee and oak. Weak intensity aromas.

Palate – Pine wood sap to start. Then straight up toffee. An offputting transition but the finish is long and more pleasant as the toffee shines through. Starts so-so, finishes pretty well.

Praline on the nose is lovely, but the oak/vanilla notes mask everything about the true expression of the agave. Granted, I don’t love reposado tequila or new world chardonnay so my disdain for this isn’t surprising to me, but nonetheless, the expression of mezcal is totally lost on this espadín but for the faintest suggestion of smoke in the middle of the sip.
