About this mezcal

Don Mateo El Legado is made by maestro mezcalero Don Emilio Vieyra Rangel at his ranch El Limon in Michoacan, Mexico. El Legado (The Legacy) is a tribute to the late maestro mezcalero Don Jose Emilio Rangel. This mezcal is the first batch to have ever been certified in the state of Michoacan. It has been rested in glass for 5 years. The agave Cupreata in this mezcal are cooked in an underground pit oven, milled by hand, fermented naturally for 8 days, and distilled in pine and oyamel Filipino style stills. Heads and tails along with natural spring water are used for alcohol adjustments.

Don Mateo de la Sierra

Mezcal Don Mateo de la Sierra is run by maestro Emilio Vieyra. Don Mateo was Emilio’s grandfather. He migrated from Guanajuato to Michoacán in 1840, and began producing mezcal. Given that Don Emilio represents his family’s sixth generation of maestro vinatero, what better ambassador of the spirit of Michoacán. Coming from Michoacán gives their mezcals a very different character and taste from those made in Oaxaca or elsewhere in Mexico.

A special batch that is super approachable and delicious. Notes of sweet pine, Red Hots candy coating, Sunny D, and rock candy. Would be fun to try this next to their regular Cupreata release. If you see it, try it.

Smells full and bright with notes of orange, lime, vanilla, orange creamsicle, and light cheddar cheese. The palate is full and round. Medium finish. Notes of leather, asparagus, carrots, potatoes, ORANGE SODA, and cilantro. This is amazing!
