El Buho Mezcal

El Buho Mezcal has notes of caramel, vanilla, salt, citrus, and dark chocolate. It's a good mixer and can be sipped neat.

About this mezcal

El Buho Mezcal is made with agave Espadin in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca. Though El Buho is marketed as a great way to “spice up your cocktails,” it’s also a pretty good sipping mezcal. It’s versatile as a mixer or a sipper. When sipped neat, it has notes of caramel, vanilla, salt, citrus, and dark chocolate. This mezcal is a product of the Jimenez family, who have been making great mezcal for five generations. Like his brother, Enrique Jimenez, Octavio Jiménez Monterroza and his children produce some very impressive mezcal. Here’s more information about their family: The Story of Don Isaac Jimenez

El Buho Mezcal

El Buho Mezcal was founded by Jose Isaac “Pepe” Jimenez Mendez, who comes from a long line of mezcal producers, and TJ Steele, a Brooklyn-based chef. TJ and Pepe launched their mezcal brand with a mission to deliver a high-quality mezcal at an affordable price in an iconic bottle. El Buho Mezcal is a small batch mezcal that is made in the heart of Oaxaca.

Lot: 34/01B
Great for the price but not overly complex to me. I get citrus and vanilla on the nose with quite a lot of pepper on the palate.

El buho espadin lot29 bottle no 28.

This is a really crisp citrus with the right amount of smoke, tobacco, Sweetness that is just perfect. This espadin calls to you for another pour.

Nose – Massive vanilla notes, almost like a vanilla coke.

Palate – Vanilla explosion out of the gates, then that sweetness settles down some. Finish is nicely balanced – vanilla, saline and smoke. This is an espadin I’d like to try at a higher ABV, I feel it could really pop.

1oz sample no batch number. This is a really frustrating Mezcal. It’s got some really great flavors but they are very soft and watered down. I’m not against low ABV Mezcals as long as they still taste good, but this tastes like it’s half water. This would be so much better with higher alcohol, it’s a real shame. Lemon oil, vanilla, coconut water, and allspice.

Big fan of this Espadin. Versatile in cocktails or sipped neat. It caught my attention more because it is the house mezcal of the excellent Espita Mezcaleria in DC. Notes of sweet agave lemon syrup and cinnamon. Slight pleasant tingle on the finish. Mezcal newbies usually love this. Lot 17/01B.

This Mezcal is very versatile for mixing cocktails. I love how the petrol flavors comes through in cocktails like a Division Bell and Too Soon (mezcal sub.). the nose is quite petrol. Tasting notes include petrol, spice and pepper and slight vegetal. Overall I gave this mezcal a very high rating due to the versatility in mixing cocktails. I have had better sipping mezcals but this one is fairly nice as well. Very reasonable price point for this mezcal.

While a little more proof muscle would help this mezcal, it is a great value. I’ve had several bottles and they have all been consistent. Great smoky nose with crisp citrus on the palate. I keep a bottle on hand, as it is a great introductory mezcal for those who have not tried one. Recommended as a sipper or a mixer.

good mezcal and value.citrus and slight smoke.finish is sweet and smooth.has good flavor but is low proof.sometimes a low proof can make a mezcal seem watered down but this is not the case with this one.i rate it at 3 and a half stars.very easy to drink.

I’ve had this numerous times and it’s never disappointed me. They have consistently good Espadin for both mixing and sipping straight. It has light smoke and a fruit-forward approach that makes this really nice for mezcal palomas. I like it straight as well because it’s full flavor and doesn’t give up through the taste. Overall this is a thumbs up!
