About this mezcal
El Jolgorio Mexicano smells of roasted agave and maple. It is made maguey Mexicano (also known as Dobadaan in other communities), which grows to be quite large. This Mezcal is straightforward and right down the middle with hints of light smoke, citrus, and peppers.
El Jolgorio Mezcal
El Jolgorio translates to “the revelry”. Jolgorios are small festivals that occur in remote, mountain villages throughout Oaxaca, Mexico. They celebrate births, deaths, weddings and Saint’s days. For centuries, the lifeblood of these celebrations has been traditional mezcal. In 2010, the Cortés family began building a collective of top mezcal distillers from around Oaxaca. As of 2019, El Jolgorio represents sixteen different families, working in ten different regions of Oaxaca, Mexico, each with its own special story. Every bottle is hand-marked with the specific details of each batch, to truly connect the drinker with the family behind the expression.
In 2017, the team behind the brand realized that certain varieties of agave would be extremely limited and they would only be able to make them available once per year (if at all). They began packaging these rare editions in black bottles to set them apart from the other releases.
The artwork on the first 8 releases was created by Alejandro Peña (Espadin, Pechuga, Tobala, Cuixe, Madrecuixe, Tepeztate, Barril and Mexicano). The next 5 labels were created by Asis Cortes (Arroqueno, Jabalin, Coyote, Tobaxiche, and Cenizo) and the Sierrudo artwork was created by Alberto Almánza.

Taste I get roasted pumpkin seeds, a humid floral note, and finishes lightly smokey with a creamy hint to the smoke. An amazing expression of Mexicano and one of the best El Jolgorios I’ve tried yet.

Strong citrus and jalapeno (light smoke) elements to this mezcal. Very smooth and enjoyable, down the middle mezcal. Would be a nice way to introduce someone to mezcal.

Nose was super smooth and very fruity. Not much alcohol in the nose at all.
Mouth: Hot and intense at first, but then it settles down and just smooths out with a tiny bit of tingle on the lips.
Taste: Bingo… love it. Very light smoke and wet earth, complicated and mixed with florals going into a really long finish. It’s great.

Prickly initial nasal impact. Aroma: wet ferns in a humid forest, pine resin, jalapeno, mint. Mouth feel is soft with a touch of soapiness (not in a bad way).
Nice initial ancho pepper heat on the tongue that gives way to a very mineral/slate flavor followed by honey, chocolate, mint, citrus zest, pine. A nice presence of smoke inhaled from cooking agave hits on the retro hale. There is a lactic component in the background and some dark berries. The buzz on the tongue lingers to an evolving finish. Keeps showing more ankle the more you drink it

Smells of fresh hay in a field with wild flowers, chocolate and a light barnyard funk.
Malt, a bit grass, followed by blackberries and vanilla. Lots of subdued, chocolate-y spice. Great mezcal, and a super interesting well of flavours. A bit overly dry finish for a full score, though.

Like eating milk chocolate in a greenhouse. Mint, light smoke, and rain water too. Really vegetal and clean tasting. Similar to the Pierde Almas Tobala I have but with less anise and funk and more of that jolgorio smooth clarity you find in a lot of their bottlings. Delicious!

You then start getting strong notes of cocao, cinnamon, chocolate cream, with some small hints of lime and ginger. The cocao flavor stands out the most to me. The softness is delicious and this bottle is definitely worth adding to the collection. Everything from El Jolgorio has been nothing short of amazing. This Mexicano is no different.

The nose is piney (pine sap), super spicy, mineral, lemon zest, along with some vegetal, roasted agave notes poking through. Roasted agave is more apparent on the taste as well as milk chocolate, juicy fruit gum, lemon/lime, mineral, and some berry fruit notes. Finish is long, semi-dry, ashy mint, a little soapy, and a tad strident. This Mexicano has a thin body but is extremely oily. All-in-in-all: Delicious!
