About this mezcal

El Mero Mero Espadin is made with agave Espadin in the town of San Dionisio Ocotopec, Oaxaca. Very little rainfall keeps agave growing low to the ground in this region. Just like grapes, this stresses the plants, forcing them to create more sugar, which can come through in the flavor. The agave used in this mezcal are tahona crushed, fermented in Encino Oak tubs, and double distilled in copper. The proofing of this spirit uses no water, only the heads and tails of the distillate. This mezcal has notes of herbal smoke, wood resin, earthy minerals and a hint of peppery spice. A typical batch of this Espadin is around 500-800 bottles total.

El Mero Mero Mezcal

El Mero Mero considers itself “The Mezcalero’s Mezcal” and began operations in 2011. All production is overseen by mezcalero Justino Garcia Cruz. The bottle label is designed by Carlos Zerpa, one of the most important Latin American contemporary artists. Senor Cruz and the surrounding mezcaleros are starting to slowly and carefully cultivate agave Tobala and Tepextate in order to develop more sustainable production practices.

One of the more complex espadíns I’ve had. Full mouthfeel, good structure. A bit burn, but not unpleasant. Light honey, banana cream dessert, smoke, some anise, herbal and nutty notes like there was some Tobaziche in there. No batch, but a recent import so probably one of the later ones.

This was my absolute favorite, unfortunately, the last few batches have been a letdown. Previously super complex hits all the points on the flavor palate and finished with a complete herb and smoke. I think the Maestro Mezcalero has been devoted too much attention to the other top-shelf “pricier” from this line.

Lot: 28 Botella: 1124/1344
Nose – Grassy nose.

Palate – A rock candy sugar pop. Anise. Black licorice. Green tasting but more bitter flower stems. The anise carries through a bit much into the finish and mingles with the smoke. A comforting oatmeal note in the aftertaste. A super clean mezcal. Overall, this is a very good sipping espadin that I think will grow on me even more. Seeing as though it’s around $50, it’s great value.

Bright, clean, crisp, and a nice caramelized sour apple note that really stood out not only to myself but some friends I was with. The more I sipped – the more I liked it. Espadin doesn’t always get the attention it deserves but this offering is worth every penny!

1/2 ounce sample no batch number. Bamboo leaves, hot fudge, rose milk, Pernod liqueur, and banana pudding. This is really good.

A spectacular mezcal that is so smooth and sippable, I can’t stop with it. It’s just delicious and the bottle is so cute. It’s one of my favorite mezcals of all time.

this mezcal was one that i had to try more than once to appreciate.it gains complexity with time.the first wiff is not that distinct but really opens up after a minute or two.the smell is mix of licorice and espadin.there is a hint of licorice on the entry with up front agave sweetness.midway are notes of sea salt, buckwheat honey and slight citrus.the finish has good smoke and a medium linger.it seems more enjoyable and more complex each time i sample.this one is a sleeper and a very good bargain.i think the fact that no water is used in the proofing gives this spirit a beautiful quality.it seems hard to find this brand but worth seeking out.would love to try the tobala and tepextate.

Lot 67. Brine, anise, fresh cut grass and citrus on the nose. Strong notes of pepper and licorice flavors. It’s a little hot, delivers a long and enjoyable finish.
