About this mezcal

El Mero Mero Tepextate is made with wild agave Tepextate that take 20-22 years to reach maturity. The agave used in this mezcal are crushed by tahona, fermented in Encino Oak tubs, and distilled in copper. Due to the rough conditions in the regions, the agave has high sugar content, which can translate to differences in flavor and profile. Typical batches of El Mero Mero Tepextate range from 125-200 bottles.

El Mero Mero Mezcal

El Mero Mero considers itself “The Mezcalero’s Mezcal” and began operations in 2011. All production is overseen by mezcalero Justino Garcia Cruz. The bottle label is designed by Carlos Zerpa, one of the most important Latin American contemporary artists. Senor Cruz and the surrounding mezcaleros are starting to slowly and carefully cultivate agave Tobala and Tepextate in order to develop more sustainable production practices.

Lot 26 Justino Garcia Cruz.

Nose is aromatic tepextate, green funky pickled jalapeno.

Palate is funky, cheesy tepextate. A veritable garden mixed up in a blender and distilled. I was surprised how different this is compared to El Jolgorio, and this doesn’t hold a candle to that amazing spirit. Still, at a much lower price point it does work in a pinch.

The initial smell transports me to Oaxaca. There is a crayon element to the flavors. This isn’t an “in your face” peppery Tepeztate. It is still interesting, a bit grassy with a Sour Patch Kids vibe. There are some chemical notes on the finish. Tried at Otra in San Francisco in early September 2021.

Lot: 19, Bottella: 060/264
Nose – Delicious candied jalapeno ice cream (or what I imagine it would smell like). Soil. Wet stone.

Palate – Honeycomb cereal. Serrano pepper flavor but not all of the spiciness, this has more of a mint driven heat. I really didn’t pick up on the mouthfeel until the middle (it coats nice and has a soft, medium viscosity to it). A very “cowboy finish” of long cut chewing tobacco and saddle leather. I really enjoy this Tepeztate!

very nice tep!i agree with another reviewer about the minerality.the nose has some sweetness but is very earthy (like garden soil).the entry is soft, sweet and lots of mineral.its a natural sweetness that seems like a clover honey.mid way the agave really stands out.the finish is fantastic.it has that green bell pepper/veggie tep quality and a pleasant sweet linger.just like the espadin of this same brand, the finish is the best part.again i think its because this mezcalero does not use water in the proofing.it gives the mezcal a wonderful quality.these are small batch mezcals and can be hard to find but worth seeking out.i have just purchased the tobala and will review that soon.

NOM-0282X / LOT 059/ Bottle 036/276
This is the first expression of Justino Garcia Cruz I’ve had the pleasure of tasting, it does not disappoint! I get a bit of honey mint and Serrano chili on the nose with a touch of tobacco. This tep is high minerality. The mouthfeel is soft.. candied Serrano & mint on the front end with leather in the mid palate and soft honeysuckle like finish.. I am looking forward to trying the Tobala and Espadin
