El Silencio Joven is a blend made with maguey Mexicano, Tobasiche, and Espadin. El Silencio is yet another brand with mezcal engineered by master Mezcalero Pedro Hernandez. He makes some other fantastic mezcal for other brands as well. The maguey Mexicano, Tobasiche, and Espadin are all cooked, fermented, and distilled separately. After distillation, they’re blended together to make the final product. The Mexicano and Tobasiche are both only distilled once, while the Espadin is double-distilled. El Silencio Joven has aromas of sundried vegetables, leather, dried fruit, and sweet smoke. It tastes of white pepper, jasmine, and fennel, and it has a slightly charred finish.
El Silencio Mezcal
El Silencio is a Los Angeles-based craft mezcal label whose product is produced in San Baltazar Guelavila, Oaxaca by Pedro Hernández, a ninth-generation Maestro Mezcalero. As an organic Mezcal, they use only the finest and carefully selected 10-12 year old Espadin agaves. Their products are handmade in small batches. Like other artisanal Mezcals, El Silencio’s production does not involve any additives or industrial processes.
In April 2019, Constellation Brands took a minority stake in El Silencio. Constellation Brands is one of the largest beer companies in the United States; the company also has a significant stake in Canopy Growth, a publicly traded cannabis company.

103 reviewsTasted at Baja Betty’s (San Diego) Agave club for July. Strong smoke and spice in the aroma, with an undercurrent of lavender and berries.
The taste is better than the regular Espadin but rather light and watery. There is also some bitterness on the back end.
The finish focuses on the bitterness and even moves a bit toward the astringent.
I did not get the batch info. But the brand rep says this will be the last batch of this style.

Nose: Dried apricot. Mossy. Sugary goodness.
Palate: Sweet cream. Red bell pepper. Flavors are great but a bit light with the 40% ABV. But super smooth. Virtually no heat in the finish but has a spec of white pepper. Aftertaste of sweet cornbread and light smoke.

This is an ensamble but it’s a one note experience and hard to identify as an ensamble. That said, the single note is a decent sugar agave punch with a lemony citrus finish. Tried at 89 Agave in Sedona, AZ and didn’t catch the batch info.

The flavor notes are a bit muddled at 40% ABV, but I believe this is really engineered for cocktails, so the lower ABV makes sense in that context. This is a great choice for cocktails and offers a lot more texture and flavor than the El Silencio Joven. I’d highly recommend using this if you’re looking to make a traditional cocktail and want to add a bit of sweetness and smoke. This is a good choice.
