El Tinieblo Joven

El Tinieblo Joven is an interesting three-agave ensamble produced in the state of Tamaulipas.

About this mezcal

El Tinieblo Joven is produced using traditional methods by mezcalero Don Baltazar Cruz in the state of Tamaulipas. The agaves are cooked in an earthen pit, crushed with a tahona, and the fermented in open air wooden vats. Next, the spirit is doubled-distilled in copper stills and adjusted to a final ABV of 40%.

El Tinieblo Mezcal

El Tinieblo is a sustainability-first artisanal mezcal brand and a unique brand in that they are completely self-reliant. Rancho El Tinieblo is a 9,000 acre farm in the state of Tamaulipas where El Tinieblo grows their agave with no pesticides or insecticides. For every agave harvested, El Tinieblo plants 25 new agaves. The mezcal is produced using traditional methods and then bottled in 100% recycled glass hand-blown bottles. The ranch has been producing spirits since 1865 and has, for the most part, remained unchanged. In 1998, it came under the ownership of Alfredo Perez Salinas and the spirits began being marketed under the new brand and the Tinieblo name. The one major change that occurred was the introduction of exotic African animals such as zebras, wildebeest, oryx, water buffalo and watusi, who now roam the ranch.

In 2019, the brand raised money via the StartEngine platform at a $7.5 million pre-money valuation.

This was one of the worst mezcals I’ve had if not the worst. Right when I opened the bottle and smelled the chemicals I had a bad feeling. As soon as you taste it, you get a flavor you should just not get from a mezcal tequila.

An indisputable smoky, earthy and a slightly citric aroma. Spicy almost from the start, it leaves a slight itching on the tongue. Very good taste.

I had the older bottle with a different label – no certification sticker, batch or lot info on the bottle. It is a clean mezcal with some spice notes and a nice smoky sweetness. At 80 proof it tastes diluted. I will use it as a mixer.

WOW!!!!!!!

WTF….. 54%

Sharp, enigmatic, spicy. Higher proof Salmiana energy. Grassiness like sour diesel, circus peanuts, gentle nice smoke, more cannabis, ripe pineapple. Aromatic as fuck, Some sweet caramel hiding in there, along with cilantro, roaated orange oils, and fresh jalepenos.

The palate is almost champahnge-like on the finish, with big ABV (54%) and true straight espadin character. Charred lime peel for days. Main palate is just a really nice, vibrant maguey nuances that’s super full and aromatic. Ultra-Floral main body, fading into those pure espadin notes and some roasted tomatillo.

Thin gasoline / alcohol smell is a bit too present over the agave. Some black olive, pork fat, dried herbs, and papaya on the nose.

The palate is peppery, thin, and tastes of strange acrid alcohols. At least the finish is better, showing more of the character from the nose. Decent sweetness is found within.

With some tweaks, maybe 46% and tighter cuts, this could be a real banger. Pass!

This is a bottle I bought in 2017 with an older label design (than currently pictured). Being produced over the border from Texas in Tamaulipas, this mezcal intrigued me. It is pretty soft with some notes of clove and dryer sheets. There is a candy sweetness here too. I think it would be better at a higher proof. As is, this mezcal just tastes a bit watery. No batch info on the bottle.
