About this mezcal

El Yope is made with agave Espadin by mezcalero Don Ismael Rosales in San Baltazar Chichicapam, Oaxaca. It’s known for having a strong personality, and herbal notes that demonstrate the intense presence of agave that stays long in the mouth. El Yope follows the rich tradition of Don Porfirio. It comes in a 42% and a 46% ABV bottling.

El Yope Mezcal

El Yope holds both Kosher and Organic Certifications for small batch mezcal that include agave Espadin, Tobala, Madrecuixe, Tepextate, Mexicano, Arroqueno, and Cuishe. Their tradition dates back four generations with the production of mezcal that was originally sold locally or consumed by family and friends. Originally all of the agave used in their mezcal grew wild, but eventually demand increased as they began to sell in the markets of San Bartolomé Zogocho and Tlacolula de Matamoros. Their mezcal remains faithful to these generations of tradition, preserving the form of craft production, honoring their family tradition, and showing respect towards mezcal and love for their culture and roots. The family’s current palenque expansion is largely funded by one of the sons who owns an IT recruiting firm in Mexico City.

Mezcalero: Ismael Rosales, Lot# AOYD Bottle: FEG ABV: 46%
Pineapple, hints of lemon grass, for the ABV, quite mellow and easy to sip, clean finish. Don’t disagree with Jonny on the overall evaluation.

Lot AOYD at 46%. Sugary aromas of salt water taffy, wintergreen, and wet sugar cane. A bit of ethanol on the nose, but not overwhelming. The palate is much softer than the nose, but with a bit of heat on the back end. Notes of caramel, grilled carrots, and Macintosh apple skins. The color red pops into both the aroma and flavor. I’m not sure what it is, but it’s definitely red. This is a good Espadin in my opinion, especially for the price.
