About this sotol

Flor del Desierto Desert is made by third-generation producer Gerardo Ruelas in Coyame del Sotol, Chihuahua from the Dasylirion Leiophyllum plant. The sotols are cooked in shallow pits fueled by oak firewood, shredded by axe and knife, open-air fermented in below-ground tanks, and double-distilled in copper pot stills. It is savory with notes of sage smoke and leather along with an underlying salinity and finish of black peppercorn.

Flor del Desierto Sotol

Flor del Desierto began in 2011 by a small group of friends after one of them, Flor, won a baking competition using sotol as the special ingredient. All sotol plants, also known as the desert spoon or sereque, are wild-harvested in the Coyame Desert and mountains of Madera. Each one of Flor del Desierto’s Sotols are distinguished by the region they’re produced in, the stills where they are distilled and the hands of each sotol maker, whose own techniques and years of experience give their spirits a unique character.

Tastes like the desert
Definitely getting sage, hospital cleaner / envelope seal ✉️, banana runt, mineral and salt, green bell pepper, aloe or a green succulent cactus🌵dusty rock. Medium body, nice and creamy. Good sweetness to balance the alcohol soaked cotton ball vibe

nom-159-scfi-2004. aromatically earthy with a touch of sweet corn but a little more industrial to the taste. strong rubber notes that dominate most other flavors that may or may not be present. regardless, an easy sipper and a solid option for anyone new to sotol.

Nose: Smoky barbecued meat, resinous sage, a little bit of a “hospital antiseptic” note but in a way that doesn’t ruin it. I’m not sure this is the right word but I’m thinking creosote?
Palate: Surprisingly sweet and balanced, with classic sotol minerality. There’s a little bit of banana candy hidden in there.
Finish: Long and smooth. Somewhat drying/astringent but not harsh at all.

Nose – Big time whole hazelnuts. Musty. Peanut shells.

Palate – Ok, weird description here, but very anti-septic yet herbal – like a deep cleaned hospital with all natural (green) products. Then a lasting black pepper spiciness in the finish and aftertaste. Again, very herbal the whole ride. I was excited after the nose but the palate didn’t quite come together for me.

Nose : starts with a heavy dose of lettuce, basil and celery. Then turns into a barnyard with wet socks. (in a good way)
Taste : sweeten herbs, vanilla, candy and liquorice.
Finish : soft with a strong presence.
Complex yet very approachable. Excellent price point.

note: brine, cashew, sage, the part of an envelope you lick to seal

palate: medium mouthfeel. wood, bell pepper, bitter chlorophyll, a touch of salt, and some heat.

medium finish. decent but miles behind the sierra, for me.

Flor del Desierto, Desierto. Batch 001 , bottle 526.

Amazing trio of sotol sweetness, minerality, and smoke. Tons of dried porks, ground coffees, hazelnut, dried orange, lavender. White chocolate and fresh tobacco, cumin, thyme, pecan, soft black pepper, green apple peel. On the palette, it hits soft, floral, with great minerality. Spicy nuts tingle on the edges of the palette. Leaves tongue refreshed, with herbal tints.

Wonderfully delcious with great typicity. Almost tempted to give another star.
