About this mezcal

Gente de Mezcal Tobala is produced by Aureliano Hernández, a 5th generation mezcalero, in San Baltazar Guelavila, Oaxaca. The agave piñas are cooked in a ground oven, crushed with a stone mill, naturally fermented in wooden vats, and distilled in copper pots. This Tobala has herbal tones along with flavors of simmering home cooked beef broth lightened up by a touch of rosemary. Gente de Mezcal Tobala won a Double Gold Medal at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Gente de Mezcal

Gente de Mezcal was founded in 2014 by three lovers of mezcal and its culture. The group founded Gente de Mezcal to promote the culture and work of Maestro Mezcaleros and their communities. In April 2019, Gente de Mezcal received international recognition from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in the form of a Double Gold Medal for their Tobalá and a Gold Medal for their Espadín and also for their Tepeztate.

In Mexico City, Gente de Mezcal shares their mezcal through ‘El Salón’, an Airbnb experience hosted by the brand owners.

Lot GMT0303 from Nov 2018. Purple aromas of lilac and blue tootsie pops. The palate has green apple, raw potatoes, kale, celery, and broccoli. Good viscosity.

My favorite of the Gente de Mezcal lineup. The brand tasting notes are quite accurate – there are some nice herbal flavors like rosemary. There is a light earthy quality to this Tobala mezcal that is nice. Lote 6MT0303 from November 2018.
