About this sotol

Gusto Historico Cucharillo was produced by maestro Emanuel Ramos in the community of Miahuatlan, Oaxaca. Emanuel is very well known for his distillation of agave spirits and this expression made with Dasylirion serratifolium is a rare release. The plants were single distilled in a copper refrescadera still.

One of my favorites. Sweet pineapple and grassy. Semi dry Dasylirion finish. One taste isn’t enough. This bottle gets better with every pour

Third tipple.

Was perhaps a little too excited to try this. Over time have tasted a great many Cucharillo, and haven’t had a steady streak of Dasylirion from Oaxaca that have impressed. This stood out immediately and had not only a unmistakeable aroma which brought about visions of soil and struggle, but flavor on the tongue that didn’t disappoint at all. Multi-flavor combination that took a good while to unpack. I’ll be going for a bottle of this soon, especially seeing the production was only 150 liters. Amazing.

Definitely different. Intense basil and thyme notes. Almost pizza-esque with the amount of rosemary on the finish. Black pepper… some faint pineapple. Glad I only had a dram and not a whole bottle.

Citric and herbal aromas. Notes of lemon, lime, oregano, and bay leaves on the nose. The palate is bright with honey, cinnamon, brown sugar, and sweet potato french fries. It’s a bit hot on the back of the palate with a light numbing element.

Nose: Wet leather. 7up sweet citrus. Bit of black licorice.

Palate: Bubble gum sugariness. Nice mouth feel. Peppermint heat. Great finish, slightly bitter.

Creamsicle! Not getting normal sotol notes of grass/earthy either. Very clean finish, with some earthy, cotton notes, but not overall complex. Smooth and balanced finish. One of the better of the Gusto Historicos.

This is the expression that I was most looking forward to after loving the Maguey Melate from Hermogenes Vasquez García which was from the same area, but it was my least favorite of the four expressions that I sampled. It’s still well made though. Very one note, I got a lot of pineapple flavor and menthol. Cut grass and a slight earthiness that reminded me of Ancho chilies.
