Finally getting around to reviewing this bottle, which I picked up over a year ago from K&L Wines. Lots of green banana on the nose and the palate on this release. Mild spice, minerality, and herbal notes as well. ,A little bit of vanilla and custard on the backend. I taste a bit more of the bicuixe than I did when I first cracked this bottle open, which had more of the tepextate up front. It seems to lack a little heat, but that could be because the bottle has been open for a while. it is also nicely balanced and well-made, which you expect from the Ramos’s. Not getting the cherries that other reviewers mentioned, but there could be more earthy stuff going on (roasted root veggies – carrots).

Batch 03.19.ER.MBT

Subtle nose for me; I didn’t initially get the cherry mentioned by others. Not particularly sweet, somewhat thin. Some pleasant heat, mint and pepper. Well balanced but not especially exciting.

**UPDATE** Subsequent tastings…this has really grown on me. Not sure if that’s the bottle being open longer or my palate getting updated. But I like it. Would buy again.

Yesterday was poured a flight of four of this line, which I’ve been eagerly awaiting to appear stateside, being somewhat familiar with the work Marco Ochoa has done previously.

Here the delicious aroma jumped out of the vaso veladora immediately and surprisingly. Very full on the nose, lots and lots going on. Was almost nervous to take a first sip and was yet rewarded with something that matched perfectly. Warm wet chili notes and some dark brown mole stuff that reminded me of a tasty ice cream I’ve never had.

Terrific mouthfeel where the refrescadera deserves a hat tip. Fantastic.

Angel food cake, iron/heme on the finish. Green onions somewhere in there. Not bad but not something id drink again and again. Fine. Maybe closer to 3.25?

For me it’s super Karwinskii dominate. Lots of minerals and light wood. Spicy peat meringue. The Tepeztate is a minor backdrop which compliments the dominant agaves well. I enjoy it. Madre Cuishe fans will love this. 48.4%.

Aromas of rich dark fruits, cherries, overripe mango, papaya, and cantaloupe. The palate is a bit starchy. I get some root vegetable textures mixing with sweet notes related to baked goods, like honey, sweet oats, and coffee cake. This is still really good, but it’s my least favorite of the first 4 releases that made it into the US.

Very fragrant. Karwinskiis seems to dominate this ensamble, as I don’t get any of the tepeztate notes I’m used to (50% madrecuixe, 20% bicuixe, 30% Tep.) Overall not bad at all – some pink bubblegum sweetness with a cream finish (candycorn?). Bit too hot though to get a higher ranking. 3.75.

?- clear
?- prickling impact with some drying and pungency.
Aromas of grapefruit, brandies cherry, brandied peach, honeysuckle, orange blossom, saffron, peppermint, green anise, green pine needles, peppercorn, almond paste, raw peanuts, and some VA/acetate.
Adequate & complex production.
Average length and ordinary to fine character.
?- coating effect with some astringent highlight; sufficient smooth alcohol; medium body.
Primarily sweet & sour taste; buttery smoothness.
Flavors of wild honey, baked quite and agave, medium smoky wood, citrus, cherry pits, saffron, peanut paste, and some musty musky, leathery damp paper character (in balance with the aromas, not in a TCA flaw/fault indication).
Medium concentrated flavor intensity, complex character, correct balance.
Straightforward and very long finish.
Very good overall impression.

*fairly different and unique character expression. interesting find, although peculiar, not extra ordinary.

Nose: Big time cherry. Wet soil. Leather. Smooth, subtle smoke.

Palate: Incredible minerality. Bubble gum. Cherry again and a hint of chocolate. Great minty heat on the finish.

This stuff is awesome!

This reminds me of Cherry Garcia ice cream! Vanilla wafers, pound cake, brandied black cherries, and dark chocolate. There is a bit of alcohol burn and a watery mouthfeel that I didn’t like but all in all it’s a tasty Mezcal.
