Gusto Historico Puntas de Tepextate, Tobala, y Espadin was produced by Virgilio Velasco in San Luis del Rio, Oaxaca. The agaves are crushed by tahona, fermented in cypress tanks, and double stilled in 350 liter copper pot stills.

The brand was started by one of the co-founders of famed Oaxacan mezcaleria Mezcaloteca, and the Gusto Histórico brand features many of the same producers, with a focus on preserving traditional production methods and practices.

Corn sweetness, hot, syrupy. More complex than I imagined.

The palate isn’t really too hot per se, despite the ABV, but there is some bite. Notes of petrol, burning rubber, diesel, and gun powder. These not typically notes that I’m excited about.

Palate: Yowza, even for a puntas this stuff is potent. I get tons of citrus oil and lemongrass. Again very piquant and mouthwatering. Nicely weighted yet silky mouthfeel.
Finish: Very long. Starting with dusty museum vibes and leading into the freshest of citrus peels and just the faintest sweetness.
Overall: I can see this being divisive but for me it falls on the right side of funky pungency. One I reach for only when in the right mood, but I’m very glad to have a bottle.

40 reviewsSomehow this one snuck by me and I had no idea it was available in my area! Quickly remedied this issue, as I am a big fan of well made Puntas mezcal and this one did not disappoint at all. I’ve had lots of mezcal (hit and miss) from this area but nothing from this maestro that I can remember but will make sure to check out future releases.
The only issue I’ve found (this is very pretty – with notes of star fruit, yam and yellow daffodil) is that the ABV (59.10%) is masked somehow and it slides down like something way less boozy. Half the bottle already gone.
Amazing juice!
Somehow this one snuck by me and I had no idea it was available in my area! Quickly remedied this issue, as I am a big fan of well made Puntas mezcal and this one did not disappoint at all. I’ve had lots of mezcal (hit and miss) from this area but nothing from this maestro that I can remember but will make sure to check out future releases.

I really wanted to get into this one. For me, there is a Windex note that is hard to overcome. It is also kind of a smoke bomb. The high ABV isn’t a problem here, it is the flavors. It is not very complex and has a short dry finish. Not all puntas are created equally and I cannot imagine having a full bottle of these puntas.
