Gusto Historico Tobaxiche Amarillo (Agave karwinskii sp) is made by maestro mezcalero Juan Garcia in Miahuatlan, Oaxaca. The agaves are cooked in an underground pit over, ground by tahona, fermented with open air yeasts, and single distilled in a copper refrescadera still. As of June 2021, Juan Garcia is 67 years, and has been producing mezcal regularly since the age of 15. He is a fifth generation mezcalero and only produces mezcal in very small batches.

Gusto Histórico specializes in bringing unique destilados de agave y mezcales tradicionales to the market. The brand was started by one of the co-founders of famed Oaxacan mezcaleria Mezcaloteca, and the Gusto Histórico brand features many of the same producers, with a focus on preserving traditional production methods and practices.

641 reviewsAfter tasting this a few times the flavors are growing on me. Prominent flavors of fresh cut cedar.. spice, smoke, and touch of cotton candy. Underlying minerality with Red Hots. Not an everyday sipper but a unique sip that I’d recommend; it expands the mind in terms of flavors we think possible in mezcal. 100 liter batch, 49.6%.

705 reviewsAromas of red hot candies, bubblegum, watermelon, and vanilla beans. The palate is peppery with notes paprika, smoked jalapeño, and serranos. This is really enjoyable but not at all what I’d expect from a karwinskii from Miahuatlan. Definitely worth a pour.

Palate – Hat tip to Greenspoint (Texas) who is on point with the Pepto note although mine leans more the Cherry flavored Pepto tablets (although this is by no means chalky, just the flavor). Light white cheddar. The heat on this is dynamic – it seems to light up different areas of the mouth (always on the move). Overall though this is a little bit too medical/herbal for me but it is still a well crafted sipper.
