About this sotol

Hacienda de Chihuahua Sotol Reposado is made from 100% wild-harvested Dasylirion plants in the Chihuahuan Desert of Northern Mexico. Master distiller José Daumas Gil de Partearroyo oversees the state of the art production process which starts by slowly cooking the plants in steam-heated ovens, natural fermentation with champagne yeast, and then distilling twice in a double-column copper still. After being distilled, this sotol is aged from 6 months up to 1 year in new french oak barrels.

Hacienda de Chihuahua Sotol

Hacienda de Chihuahua Sotol is operated by Vinomex and the distillery is located in Delicias, Chihuahua, Mexico. The distillery originally produced brandy under the guidance of its master distiller but later switched to sotol. To guarantee the continued availability of sotol, Vinomex has initiated an extensive conservation program which ensures the preservation of the Dasylirion plant for future generations. Sotol Hacienda de Chihuahua is USDA organic certified and Kosher certified. The company slogan is “Like Tequila? Love Sotol”.

LOTE 10102019
Region: Alameda, Chihuahua, Mexico
ABV: 38%
Production: ceramic oven, natural fermentation with champagne yeast, twice distilled in double-column copper still, aged 12 months in new French white oak barrels
Appearance: clear, very light straw yellow. thin but still coats the glass. some floaters from the natural cork.
Nose: floral, orchard fruit (apples + apricot), hint of smoke
Palate: butterscotch, oak & vanilla
Finish: Earthy, lingering vanilla

this is very much an enjoyable, easy drinking repo. not the most complex, some would say watered down, & possibly not the best example of sotol since it is barrel aged instead of showcasing the plant’s flavor by itself. I can acknowledge that, it is what it is & good enough that I would consider giving Hacienda’s 45 abv Sotol Rustico a try.

Nose and palate are a little like briny cheese mixed with wood from the aging. Trying not to say urine, but has a little bit of funkiness and sulfuric taste.

LOTE: 814315
Nose: Floral sweetness. Very light vanilla.

Palate: Initially bitter. Black licorice. Vanilla. Tad bit of a soapy taste. Thin mouth-feel. Floral finish but more from the stems or leaves. Earthy wet soil detected in the aftertaste with lingering vanilla.

The French oak barrels do add value to this brand – versus their platinum sotol. Still, it’s a bit rough.

Another gray sipping Sotol. Much like their Añejo this Sotol is very smooth and lacks the harsh bite of many other drink. The Reposado is a fantastic fairly cheap bottle of Sotol to enjoy with company. So smooth it’s easy to find yourself enjoying good conversation with friends till sunup; or the bottle runs dry. This is my go to for a inexpensive bottle of Sotol.
