About this sotol

La Higuera Cucharilla is produced by Alejandro Vasquez in Miahuatlan, Oaxaca. Cucharilla/Cucharillo refers to a variation of the sotol plant (Dasylirion lucidum rose), which is not commonly found in Oaxacan communities, but can be found in the Miahuatlan region where this spirit is produced.

La Higuera Sotol

Sotol La Higuera is produced using traditional methods in Aldama, Chihuahua by Master Sotolero Gerardo Ruelas. He cooks the different varieties in an outdoor conical oven fired by wood and rocks. The Dasylirion varieties are milled by hand with axes. Fermentation occurs with wild yeast in 1,000-liter pine vats. The sotols are double distilled in copper alembic stills.

Lot 1, Bottle 130/500.

Candy on the nose! Candy, candy, candy. Hubba Bubba bubble gum, banana Runts, salt water taffy, and blue raspberry SweeTarts. I also get aromas of violets, talc, and suede. A captivating palate reveals new flavors every time I open the bottle: ripe banana, brand new pool float, celery leaf, hay, Oreo cream, soft Ceylon cinnamon, and heavy florality (echinacea, lavender, chrysanthemum). The mouthfeel is smooth but astringent enough to numb the lips, and the finish is just as complex as the palate leads you to expect: perlite, worm castings, nickel, arugula, rose water, and crunchy honeycrisp apples.

I remember being only two sips into a 1 oz. sample before ordering a bottle, and I swear my eyes roll back in my head every time I give myself a pour. It’s that good.

Whoa!!! This is crazy floral!! Fabric softener, plumeria, jasmine, Abba Zaba candy bar, banana taffy, a very aromatic apple, canned pears in syrup, nutmeg, and cedar chest. I’m really liking this one!!

Nose: Like opening a box of new basketball shoes (rubber). Blueberry marshmallow (like in a cereal box).

Palate: Ripe banana all the way through, especially prominent to start. Very floral. A cool minerality to it. Heat really kicks in near the finish but not too crazy. Aftertaste is dry and a little bitter.

Aroma of rosewater, taffy candy, blueberry, raspberry, and honeydew melon. Clean and simple in the mouth. Flavors of romaine hearts, alcohol heat, and chestnuts. A few sips finish with essence of plastic or a rubber mallet but not in an off-putting way if that makes any sense. Parsley and potting soil flavors linger on the palate after the sip is gone. A little numbing on the finish as well.

Lot 1 48.2% $157.99/750

Wow. The sotol name is “ludicum rose”, and there’s definitely some rose petal notes to this. I went and smelled some essential oil thereof to be certain. Fresh linen, chlorine, chrysanthemum as well in good amounts. Gentle “rain on rocks” minerality, as we say, but yea it’s about the most floral expression I’ve had.

Sweet entry, sweet palate with some crabapple and other red orchard fruits. When you swallow, the more classic sotol profile comes through. Minerality, dried herbs, light mint, more florality, a light almond flour. Good texture and viscosity. A light wooliness on the finish, though pleasant.

This is a fascinating bottle. A very kind person was gracious enough to give me a sample about a week ago, I promptly bought a bottle and am excited. I really do like sotol, and the excessive floral nature is very up my alley.

Higher proof I think would’ve been nice, just a few points. Not much to complain about. I’m just now seeing the watermelon note in the official tasting notes – good call.
