About this mezcal

La Luna Bruto is made with maguey Bruto, which is in the Inaequidens agave family. The agave used in this mezcal were harvested in the hills just past Etucuaro, Michoacan. These wild agave are massive, but unfortunately have low sugar content and tend to provide a very low yield in production. These agave cooked for 168 hours, rested for 288 hours after being cooked, and fermented for 192 hours. Due to the low sugar content, the fermenting agave was inoculated with Pulque from the same agave.

La Luna Mezcal

La Luna Mezcal is made in Etucuaro, Michoacan. Tucked away in this mountainous region is the municipality of Villa Madero, which is the home to the Perez Escot family and Destiladora Las Azucenas.  The family has been traditionally crafting mezcal on the same property since 1910 and is currently on their 4th generation of mezcaleros with Isidro Perez Escot training his son Amador at the moment.

Lote 34 48.51% Aromas from the bottle are light smoke, roasted papaya, old leather and moderate alcohol. Flavors are mild roasted coconut dark green fermented vegetable matter. Lots of herbs and spices thyme oregano And something in the flavor profile like sandalwood or cider that leaves a long lasting flavor in your mouth. There’s an interesting Brown flavor profile through the whole taste. This one’s most unusual and I like the flavor profile quite a bit. This one baffled me for quite a while turns out it’s fresh bailed Hay clover and alfalfa flavors and Aromas.

Maybe I just drink too much mezcal from Oaxaca but I really enjoyed this as something a little different and on the fruitier side of the spectrum. I love the Michocan expression from Mezonte and although this didn’t deliver that level of complexity I still found myself loving it and going back to pour another taste almost immediately. Juicy tropical fruit flavor/cantaloupe that lingers with all the smoke coming on the backend of the flavor. Fruit forward – silky. Some great notes already – just nice to see so many other states start getting product in the market.

Nose – Sweet lemonade. Thyme butter.

Palate – An interesting funky, fruity meatiness that I love – like a ribeye marinated in Hawaiian Punch and charred over an encino ember campfire. Black pepper. Blue cheese. Champagne. The aftertaste goes on for minutes.

Lot 1. Totally agree with the leather and lime notes from Tyler. I love this Agave and La Luna does a great job with it. It’s fruity and herbal and the flavors are deep and strong. Pineapple, spearmint, thyme, sage, key lime, and leather jacket. Delicious.

When I first tried this, my notes were: Leather, charred honey butter, and key lime. I wasn’t the biggest fan because there were some odd flavors. This time around I’m really enjoying it. It definitely has some funk that might remind you of raicilla. I still get the key lime and lime rinds. There’s an interesting herbal fruit preserves note. This is different and a must try. Lot 1, ~300 liters, 46.92% ABV.
