About this mezcal

La Luna Mezcal is made with agave Cupreata in Etucuaro, Michoacan which is home to other Michoacan mezcal producers as well. At an elevation of 1,790 meters, the Cupreata Agave are harvested after eight to ten years of growth. The agave piñas are fire roasted in a stone-lined horno using estate sourced white oak. The cooked agave is milled by hand and naturally fermented in open-air  wooden vats before being double distilled in a copper and pinewood Tarascan still. Due to the artisinal nature of this mezcal, the ABV will vary by batch.

La Luna Mezcal

La Luna Mezcal is made in Etucuaro, Michoacan. Tucked away in this mountainous region is the municipality of Villa Madero, which is the home to the Perez Escot family and Destiladora Las Azucenas.  The family has been traditionally crafting mezcal on the same property since 1910 and is currently on their 4th generation of mezcaleros with Isidro Perez Escot training his son Amador at the moment.

Won’t blow your mind as a sipper but I really actually like this as a mixer for a mezcal margarita and similar price point to Oaxacan espadin mixer mezcals.

Lote 42, 46.12%
Cupreata, manso sahuayo, tequiliana
Some tropical fruit funk, a bit of rubber bands, and some light mesquite smoke. Tried in a 50ml sampler (love having mezcal of this quality in a tiny bottle!) and kinda wish I had more.

No bottle info

Review #125: The nose has strawberry, vanilla, acetone, and clay.
The palate has strawberry, cherry, pine, fresh mint, bell pepper, light creaminess, and clay.

I found this super solid, especially for the price. It’s a bit thin and not very strong on its flavors, but it is so easy going and everything just tastes good. Can’t ask for much more for an entry level mezcal.

LOTE: 36, 46.12%, 200ml

Nose – Sharp and sweet; honey, ginger, Sharpie marker. A vegetal and grassy note in there as well.

Palate – Very subdued; dry and bittersweet, like orange rind. Strong vegetal notes as well; celery stalks, green bell pepper.

Finish – Drier on the backend; rubber bands. A hit of ginger too.

Good but not my flavor. Not sure if it’s because this is my first Cupreata or if I just stumbled into a bad batch, but I wasn’t feeling this. It’s dry and barely bittersweet, and then the flavor hardly fluctuates. Almost as if it’s missing something… lacking in complexity; thin.

LOTE: 24
ABV 45.55%
Initial nasal impact is a slight prickle and predominantly sweet.
Aroma: Bang with tropical fruit (mango and guava). Sweet wildflower honey follows. Trace of ash. Very little alcohol on the nose.
Oily and buttery mouthfeel with sufficient alcohol.
The Michoacan fruity character hits first on the palate with guava and mango at the forefront with sweet banana (peel with brown spots) peaking in. Well balanced, med – long finish with lingering black pepper and sweet tropical fruit. Reasonably priced mezcal and very good bang for the buck

Lot 66. I was prepared to be disappointed, but I am having a lucky day so far. Quite solid. Not the kind of complexity which warrants high prices, but it’s reasonable at $45.99. Jury might still be out.

Lot P1-05
46.12% ABV

Aroma: Bubble Gum, slight lactic note, mango, sweet citrus, and roasted agave.

Flavor: Lactic note from the nose comes through on the palette as well, I enjoy it and think it adds a nice layer of complexity to the spirit. Bubblegum notes on the palette as well. Prune-like fruit coming through as well… almost like a fruit leather flavor.

Medium finish with an average mouthfeel.

This is solid for the price. A great mezcal to sip, mix, and introduce others to mezcal with. This is also a solid bottle to have on the shelf for connoisseurs to pull down as a daily sipper.

First-ever mezcal (coming from tequila) so I don’t have a big frame of reference. I really enjoy this stuff, the smoke is front and center but the agave is also there along with a fruity/melon presence and some baking spices. Interest is definitely piqued, I’ll be exploring different ones!

On the nose i get olives, cinnamon, slightly floral. On the palate, I get apple, cinnamon, and some minerals, very sweet. Only real draw back is the short finish

When I see cupreata I get excited because the delicious flavor. This one fell flat with just a heat like a cheap espadin. I am surprised so many high stars but maybe the have changed productions styles recent since this brand is now with Southern Wine for distribution and probably getting diluted in quality. It was cheap at the bar so I shouldnt have expected much

Lote 42 – I loved the 100% cupreata expression, but looks like they’ve now made their flag ship product an ensemble of Cupreata, Tequilana, and Manso. I REALLY enjoyed this new batch. The aromas are of stone fruit, unripe mango and plantain. The palate is balanced, but rich with minerality and a soft agave sweetness. The smoke is nuanced on the back end and the proof is high enough that it made great cocktails. Definitely recommend this!

Sweet caramel nose with a warm cream and cheese funk. Taste is roasted poblano pepper, parsley, and a slight sourness. Thin in the mouth, the palette is almost completely missing except for some numbing alcohol on the lips.

Lote P1-05:
Absolutely the best deliciousness to price ratio I’ve ever experienced in a mezcal available for purchase in the US. Bursting with tropical fruity, funky and slightly cheesy flavors. Assuming that batches stay in a similar league as this, I’ll always have a bottle on my shelf.

Lote 22 (50ml sample)
Great smell – sweet and juicy candy. Taste of cantaloupe, dustiness, and some earth. Slightly abrasive, but the sweet/tangy flavors make up for it. More of a 3.75, which seems like a great value!

Lot 24

Wrapped tight with minerals, cantaloupe, and juicy fruit gum up front. White pepper comes in late before a finish that goes a bit ashy. A lot going on for a bottle at this price. An extra half star for value

Sweet cantaloupe. One of the best or the best $40 mezcal you can buy in the USA. Highly recommended for newcomers.

For the money (generally around $40) this mezcal is one of my favorites. Tropical flavors, cantaloupe, and light smoke (which is good for mezcal haters). Not ideal for Cupreata purists as this is a little light and doesn’t carry the funk that some look for but nonetheless a pleasant bottle to sip on as it lingers in your mouth and doesn’t come across diluted.
