About this mezcal

This La Luna ensamble is crafted with two agaves that are native to the state of Michoacan. Many do not realize that Michoacan is included in the Denomination of Origin for Tequila. Due to this, Tequilana Blue Weber agave is abundantly grown in the vibrant soils of Michoacan. This ensamble is 70% Cupreata and 30% Tequilana.  The cooked agave is milled by hand and naturally fermented in open-air  wooden vats before being double distilled in a copper and pinewood Tarascan still. Due to the artisinal nature of this mezcal, the ABV will vary by batch.

La Luna Mezcal

La Luna Mezcal is made in Etucuaro, Michoacan. Tucked away in this mountainous region is the municipality of Villa Madero, which is the home to the Perez Escot family and Destiladora Las Azucenas.  The family has been traditionally crafting mezcal on the same property since 1910 and is currently on their 4th generation of mezcaleros with Isidro Perez Escot training his son Amador at the moment.

Lote: 30
Nose – Limeade. Rubber. Sweet, smoky notes.

Palate – Roasted azul maguey, slightly crispy. Slick mouthfeel. I always seem to get an awesome pink lemonade influence with La Luna chino maguey and it’s in the mix here too. Black pepper comes through in the finish. Honey in the aftertaste. Like Tyler alluded too there is a quality blanco tequila in here with a tasty cupreata.

Lote 15; ABV 45.12

Nose of bubblegum, plastic/rrubber, and some undetermined green herbal notes. Wow, this is by far the woodiest mezcal I’ve tried yet. Flavors of oak dominate along with peppery spices and a very slight campfire smoke, finishing with a very dry yet semi-sweet cupreata undertone. So dry. The ABV becomes apparent on the finish, a satisfying warmth. It’s good, and if you like stuff on the drier side of the mezcal spectrum, this may be for you. But for my tastes, this is not nearly as flavorful nor as enjoyable as their Cupreata.

Great funk on the nose… new rubber like opening a canister of brand new tennis balls. There some white pepper on the palate, some sweet and pepper jack cheese.

Had the cupreata at home, and needed to give this one a shot. Very nice, different context from what i am used to with Tequiliana.

Super unique mezcal Michoacán. The blue weber agave stands out of bit. Like a good blanco tequila there are some nice honey notes.. however this is no tequila. There is a woody cigar box flavor here mid-palate that gives it some sweet and rich spice. Dry finish. Lote 1 at 45.77% ABV.

Lote 1. ABV of 45.77%. Bottle #55. This one smells like new basketballs, like fresh rubber, but in a really nice, non-synthetic way. It’s interesting that something so organic and natural could taste and smell like this. It’s really something special. At first sip, I thought that I liked the La Luna Cupreata more, but the complexity of this mezcal grew on me. It’s slightly sweet with some nice hints of pepper and all spice. I’ve never seen a Cupreata/Tequilana ensamble before and was stoked to find this. Highly recommended!
