About this mezcal

La Luna Manso Sahuayo is produced using an unclassified agave (Agave Sp) called maguey Manso Sahuayo (the locals call it Manso, Chato, or Cenizo). The agave for this mezcal were harvested from the area of Jiquilpan and Sahuayo, Michoacan. While this agave can grow wild, the agave used in this mezcal were cultivated. The agave cooked for 121 hours, rested after cooking for 144 hours, fermented for 12 days, and were distilled in a copper “cazo” and pinewood still.

La Luna Mezcal

La Luna Mezcal is made in Etucuaro, Michoacan. Tucked away in this mountainous region is the municipality of Villa Madero, which is the home to the Perez Escot family and Destiladora Las Azucenas.  The family has been traditionally crafting mezcal on the same property since 1910 and is currently on their 4th generation of mezcaleros with Isidro Perez Escot training his son Amador at the moment.

* Lot: 23
* ABV: 48.51%

Nose is citrus and chocolate and spearmint. Slightly sour and definitely different (in a very positive way).

Taste is wild and intense but stops well short of offensive. Earthy and mineraly; the taste of the processes the agave has went through really shines here. I’ve honestly never had anything exactly like this before; cedar and herbaceous with enough sweet sugar to round it out properly. I prefer other La Luna offerings to this particular expression but it’s interesting enough to warrant another pour in the future…

Lots of burn on the backside with subtle undertones of many different types of fruits. An overall bright spirit that would be great on a early summer Sunday afternoon; A-!

Lote 15, 48.51% abv

Review #23: very pungent, tangy pineapple, pine, earthy, and jalapenos are dominant with moderate smoke, lemon, mineral and sweet and spicy herbs make their way after to the end.

This has a strong vegetal and earthy base to it with a bit of citrus and herbs mixed in. Very enjoyable

This one gets four stars for power. Subtle nose, explosion of texture, sweetness, really is like you are tasting the plant. Delicious.

Most interesting mezcal I’ve had in a while. Vegetal and fruity notes on the nose, like jalapeño and pineapple. Palette is super soft and creamy, with a light mineral finish. The cool thing is a few seconds after you think it’s done this lime note comes on the very very back end.

Nose – Baked Granny Smith apple. Lemon drops. A slight sour smokiness to it.

Palate – The aforementioned pink lemonade hit is real – like a ton of bricks to start. Middle becomes hotter and comes with a good slug of smoke. Very grassy finish. Aftertaste has a heavy smoked and over-salted codfish taste (more smoke and salt – slightly fishy).

The smell opens up the nose with a tangy sweetness. The taste differed, a salty lemon brine & fades into a lasting resinous flavor of cedar.

Lot 1. My initial impression was that this is the Mezcal version of Fernet the famous herbal liqueur. Anise and thyme and a million other herbs, but then I read the other reviews and they were right. As well as Fernet there’s Pink lemonade! The one they serve at In’N’Out burger. Orange soda! Cotton candy! I like this because it’s unique and interesting.

Nose: yup, the pink lemonade is real. Definitely loads of lemon, strawberry, and spearmint. Even a bit of cotton candy as well.
Palate: the citrus aromas transition to orange on the tongue, with saline/salt water too.
Mouthfeel: notably thinner than the agave spirits I tend to prefer, there is nice, food friendly acidity though.
Overall: decent, straightforward fruit bomb. Not my favorite, but I’m still happy I have a bottle for summer days.

Fanta orange soda! With hints of Romano cheese on the nose. Sweet and creamy. Quite unlike any other typical agave spirit. Reminds me of a very subtle orange liqueur on the palate with some lime on the finish. Well worth looking for this if you want something different.

Orange and lemon peel with some tropical fruit on the nose. Thinking Country Time Lemonade. Creamy mouthfeel, this is bright with agave notes and some mint. Great heat through a long finish, really enjoyable.

Lot 1. Smells incredible! Aromas of strawberry lemonade. Sour with some additional hints of cotton candy on the nose. The palate is almost identical to the nose. Tastes like pink lemonade and Popsicle, like a very high ABV shandy. Very big and bright. I dig it.
