La Medida Tepeztate

La Medida Tepeztate varies by release. Check your bottle for specific details.

About this mezcal

La Medida Tepeztate is made with agave Tepeztate which is harvested from a wild, jungle environment. This agave is harvested at 1,700 meters above sea level and takes 25-30 years to reach maturity. It’s traditionally produced in San Pedro Totolapan, Tlacolula, Oaxaca.

La Medida Mezcal

Mezcales La Medida brings together more than 46 Oaxacan producers. Their mezcal is made in small palenques with over 450 years of tradition and culture. The brand is run by Julián Vidal Gómez Rodríguez, who began working with mezcal over 40 years ago. Throughout his career he has worked with brands like Monte Alban, Benevá, and Del Maguey. He focuses heavily on mezcal’s mysticism and the traditional production methods that have been used for hundreds of years. Some of their mezcal is certified, while other releases go by “aguardiente de agave.” Each batch is different. Check your bottles for details.

BATCH: MIA-T2003US, 46.39%, 200ml
José Díaz Bustamante

Nose – Vegetal, earthy, and slightly sweet. Wet wood, fresh cut grass, faint gasoline, cucumbers, and some produce-section aromas.

Palate – Hot and tangy; has a bit of a punch, but not too spicy! Bubblegum, a burst of citrus, ripe oranges, banana, and some vegetal notes of green peppers and jalapeños.

Finish – Deep, rich, and fruity. Passion fruit, grapes, apples, fruit punch.

Fantastic, really surprising pour! Very tasty and so much going on in the palate. The layers of flavors just coalesce. I’d say on par with Jolgorio’s expression. La Medida has been a sleeper, and continues to impress me with their offerings.

MIA-2202-22d Meliton Juarez. 47%
Slightly rotting agave and fruity funk on the nose. Agave with lots or rubbery lactic notes. Kind of like a clarin rum. Tingly on the tongue (?). With a unremarkable finish.

Green chill invades the nostrils, supported by a team of sweetmyrtle bushes — strong and nice nose. Green peppers, cucumber skin, watermelon and guavas on the palate. Well structured and integrated alcohol. I feel that La Medida and Memorable are both underrated brands. Lot MIA-2101H 2021

Smells like charcoal and tastes burned. Not pleasant at all. Under the charcoal you might find some green pepper, gras and minerals.

MIA-T1903US/2019. Like night and day between this and the Pluma Negra Tep that I just tasted/reviewed back to back. This smells light and fruity, with aromas of green apples, pears, and green grapes. It actually smells really intriguing for a Tep. The palate however is underwhelming. It tastes overly charred, almost burnt with high ash content.

Lote: MIA-T2002US (200 ml)
Green, vegetal smell, and fairly pleasant. But then pretty underwhelming taste – burntness as others have mentioned, with some new rubber, synthetic, tennis ball taste. Some of the classic green, tep notes are buried down in there deep, which I’ve come to both love & expect, but not nearly as much as I’d prefer from this bottle. So overall not what I’d expect and want from a Tepeztate or a mezcal from Miahuatlan. 3.25.

Agree with The Agave Fairy on this one. There’s an overriding burnt note. Underlying notes of cooked green onions. A bit hot with a quick finish. Not getting much of the mineral complexity I’d except from Miahuatlan. Smoke lover will enjoy this. MIA-T1903US/2019/46.41

Nose: Roasted peppers, almost nutty, some smoke and very nice charcoal notes. Actually kinda surprised at all the nice smoked wood notes. Oregano, more peppers, varied peppers, green peppercorns.

Palate: More neutral entry, and a little simple. That ash on the nose translates into a slightly acrid burnt taste. Finish is plain and short.

I think I’ll probably be in the minority, but too “burnt”. Some really good stuff going on otherwise!

Batch MLA-T1903US

Sweet and rich here, tons of vanilla cream, agave syrup, a hint of nougat, and bell pepper. Almost a 180 from the nose. Some heat but not unreasonable. Some string bean on the back palate. Really crisp.

Wow, this is really interesting. Not my favorite Tep, but the complexity is undeniable.

Lot MIA-M-1701, distilled 2017. A very neutral mezcal. Still, it’s predominantly vegetal and dry with underlying notes of tart citrus fruit, a pinch of salty minerality and a little honey-like agave sweetness.

Fresh jalapeño, buttered popcorn, pineapple, pine and eucalyptus. A meaty, complex Mezcal. It was the unanimous favorite of the 5 La Medida expressions we tried.

Vegetal aroma with hints of olives and capers. It has a gentle spice and wood & mineral flavours. Slightly dry aftertaste of grapefruit peel and cooked agave sweetness.
Great sipper!
