La Medida Tobala

La Medida Tobala varies by release. Check your bottle for specific details.

About this mezcal

La Medida Tobala is made with maguey Tobala which is harvested from a wild, jungle environment. This agave is harvested at 1,900 meters above sea level. It’s traditionally produced in San Dionisio Ocotepec, Tlacolula de Matamoros, Oaxaca.

La Medida Mezcal

Mezcales La Medida brings together more than 46 Oaxacan producers. Their mezcal is made in small palenques with over 450 years of tradition and culture. The brand is run by Julián Vidal Gómez Rodríguez, who began working with mezcal over 40 years ago. Throughout his career he has worked with brands like Monte Alban, Benevá, and Del Maguey. He focuses heavily on mezcal’s mysticism and the traditional production methods that have been used for hundreds of years. Some of their mezcal is certified, while other releases go by “aguardiente de agave.” Each batch is different. Check your bottles for details.

Funk and fruit. Sweet and cucumber on the plate. Pepper. I enjoyed this one.

MIA-T2002US 2020, 46.63%
Berta Vasquez – Chichicapam

Nose – Savory; chicken bouillon. With a touch of something sweet and tart, like orange blossom, coconut, and cinnamon.

Palate – A little overcooked; smoky and burnt. It’s a strong, sweet, rubber taste. Bubblegum, or like a brand new mouthguard. Overly ripe mangoes.

Finish – Subtle burnt bbq.

Very good, fantastic flavor.

Very pleasant smell, soft without biting alcohol. Simple taste, easy to drink but also a bit disappointing for a Tobala. As an Espadin I would consider him interesting. still not a bad mezcal.

Update: tasting this again from a batch just imported (sorry, did not catch the batch this time either). This is a very nice tobalá! Lime, flint and loft on the nose. Quince, toffee and herbs in a nice balance. Great price point.

No batch I’m afraid, but I had a recent one with the blue label. It’s nice, a bit like DM’s tobalà (which I like a lot) but a bit thinner. This is written in retrospect, but I’d say: reading the other reviewers’ opinion I think this bottle deserves a second chance.

Distilled and bottled in 2019. Tahona, Earthen oven, fermented in wooden barrels, 2x distilled in copper pot. 45%. Batch: SBG-T1902US
Initial nasal impact is warming and sweet. Vanilla and tangerine dominate the nose, reminiscent of a Creamsicle. A bit of tarragon is present.
Somewhat coating on the tongue with a sufficient presence of alcohol heat. Primary taste is sweet. The vanilla and tangerine carry over from the aroma to the flavor and dominates here as well. A bit of mint and light ash hit on the retro nasal. The heat stays on the tongue during a medium/long finish. This tobala is on the sweeter side.

Nose – Vanilla. Orange citrus. Very espadin-like on the nose. Dryer sheets. Some roasted peanut in there as well.

Palate – Orange blossom. Slightly burnt rice pudding. Fried green tomatoes in oil. Pine needles. A hint of bacon grease. Finish is salty and smoky with a touch of clay.

This Tobala is… fine. Not very sweet. Notes of burnt vanilla and hickory. Almost a liquid smoke thing going on. Dried orange slices. A bit of edamame. For me, it would be more enjoyable if the burnt/smoke flavor wasn’t so dominate. Batch SBG-T1093US.

Batch SBG-T1903US

Powerful and complex on the palate. Sweet cream, blueberries and raspberry, some cotton candy and light ash. Faint bubble gum note, here along with some banana. Light mineral smoke and some pepper.

I’m a really big fan of this Tobala. It’s excellent when you consider the complexity, enticing fruit character and competent balance between sweet and smoky. Well done.

SBG-T1903. Cloyingly sweet. Orange marmalade and corn syrup. Way too sweet for me. Slight chemical taste.

Lote: SBG – T1803M
Aggressive alcohol on the nose, a little bit of mineral, smokiness and (burnt rubber?). Goes a little bit herbal, petrol and sweet. Retro sweet and aggressive alcohol again.

As I drank this tobala I started to enjoy it more. Initially it reminded me on an Espandin but became sweeter, and picked up gingery and clove like notes. Still found it to be abit prickly and with a minerally sourness, becoming earthy in the finish. A burnt wood, meadowy smell to it which is pleasant.

Tobala has a gorgeously smooth and crisp taste with balanced smoke, very gentle on the palate with a lingering taste of minerality that reminds of wet clay. Absolutely delicious and my favourite of the range!

Went to the La Medida bar in Oaxaca and they only had two La Medida mezcals available, which is weird. I would have though they’d have a lot more. I tried Lot TE-1401. It was super light and thin but drinkable. Heavily perfumed with notes of orange and peanut oil.
