Lagrimas de Dolores Cenizo

Lagrimas de Dolores Joven is an unaged mezcal that is made from agave Durangensis (Cenizo). It has limited distribution outside of Mexico.

About this mezcal

Lagrimas de Dolores Joven is made with agave Durangensis (Maguey Cenizo) in the state of Durango. This mezcal is one of a growing number made by a maestra mezcalera (female mezcalero). Her name is Fabiola Ávila and she has a degree in Biochemistry and Biotechnology with a specialization in fermentation from the Technological Institute of Durango. Raul Resendiz is a biochemist who also assists in the production of this mezcal. This mezcal is unaged and has a slight smoky flavor with a subtle herbal aroma. The ABV may vary slightly by batch.

Lagrimas de Dolores Mezcal

Lagrimas de Dolores is made at Hacienda Dolores, which is run by the Gutierrez family and situated about 10 minutes from Durango City. They have a goal of replanting for each of the agave that they use in their mezcal. They report that they have an annual goal of planting around 50,000 agaves. Their bottle was designed in Feuquières, France. The leather on the cap is meant to be a signature feature from Mexican fine-horse culture. Their logo is a representation of Our Lady of Sorrows (latin: Mater Dolorosa) the patron saint of Hacienda Dolores. Their Joven and Anejo mezcal are produced entirely with Agave durangensis, which is endemic to the State of Durango in Northern Mexico. They also have special limited releases that feature rare agave like I’gok, Cimmarion, and Tepemete.

Lote: C-17 (47%)
Nose – Fresh picked strawberry. Grass. Toffee.

Palate – Hay. Green peppercorn. Celery leaf. Slight cheesecake sweetness. Herbal/minty finish with a burst of campfire ember. Feels light for 47% ABV. A pretty decent cenizo.

For all the Mezcal hustlers

Bottle 29, lot 6-NG

This expression of durangensis is easily one of my most highly regarded “gateway drinks” for anyone new to drinking Mezcal. Very smooth, lovely sweet buttery/caramel notes while retaining enough lingering smokiness to remind you that this is definitely a Mezcal. Slight black pepper after tones in the back palette finish off this delicious bottle. If you are lucky enough to be in the hospitality industry with access to this bottle it would be a shame not to talk about this to guests both as an educational tool and as an easy way to introduce yourself to “the wine of spirits” (shout out to my Mezcal mentor Carlitos)

Dixeebe folks, get amongst it

This is what makes mezcal exciting! (Lot 5-NGE, bottle 48) This Durango offering differs so much from the mezcal sitting on the shelf next to it. It’s like taking a holiday. Creamy start, a nod to the 45% then the outdoors kick in with wood smoke and yes a touch of pepper. A nice way to top off a tasting night .. ‘and now here’s a nice little taste from Durango!’

Very different mezcal. Smells and tastes like butter popcorn. Extremely smooth and soft on the tongue.

Lot C-73/O 315-D2-01. Buttered popcorn! It smells like I’m at the movie theatre. Thick and rich on the palate with notes of freshly cracked black peppercorns and butter. This stuff is awesome! If this is any representation of what Durango has to offer, then there are very good things on the horizon.

An incredibly unique mezcal from Durango. It begins with an aroma of sweet cream. This mezcal is bursting with flavors of buttered popcorn, caramel, and firewood. At 45% ABV it has a great balance. Every sip reminds me of the first time I tried it at Tales & Spirits in Amsterdam. My batch number is a bit smudged but it ends with D2-01. 4 stars.

In February 2024 I tried a batch purchased in February 2021 and it wasn’t as enjoyable as the earlier batch. A bit pungent with strong allspice. Fermented orange on the nose. 3 stars. No batch number.
