Lagrimas de Dolores Masparillo

Lagrimas de Dolores Masparillo is made with maguey Masparillo (Maximiliana) which is reportedly rare in this region of Durango.

About this mezcal

Lagrimas de Dolores Masparillo is made with maguey Masparillo (agave maximiliana) by the de la Cruz and Flores families in San Miguel Temoaya. The cooked agave hearts are crushed by hand using machetes and fermented in open pine vats, and then double-distilled in a conical wooden still. This alembique viejo is the traditional method in Durango, essentially a modernized version of the older indigenous tree-trunk stills used long ago in the area by Huicholes and other indigenous groups in Durango.

Lagrimas de Dolores Mezcal

Lagrimas de Dolores is made at Hacienda Dolores, which is run by the Gutierrez family and situated about 10 minutes from Durango City. They have a goal of replanting for each of the agave that they use in their mezcal. They report that they have an annual goal of planting around 50,000 agaves. Their bottle was designed in Feuquières, France. The leather on the cap is meant to be a signature feature from Mexican fine-horse culture. Their logo is a representation of Our Lady of Sorrows (latin: Mater Dolorosa) the patron saint of Hacienda Dolores. Their Joven and Anejo mezcal are produced entirely with Agave durangensis, which is endemic to the State of Durango in Northern Mexico. They also have special limited releases that feature rare agave like I’gok, Cimmarion, and Tepemete.

This is good stuff. Lots of herbal spicy notes.. almost like cannabis candy. Well balanced. Leaves the palate with a tingle from the spice, not the alcohol. Need to taste more from this mezcalero. 1 oz sample with no lot number; purchased in a Lagrimas de Dolores tasting kit in February 2021.

Smells amazing. Highly and intensely aromatic. Aromas of cottage cheese, vanilla, and pineapple. The palate is coconut, cucumber, watermelon, vanilla, fresh peppercorns, campfire smoke. Perfumed finish. No batch number on sample.

Batch M7.

It actually took me three or four occasions with this before I liked it. Initially it was so packed with intense and complex flavors that it seemed almost like a perfume. There’s fruit, berries, essential oils, floral aromas, sweetness and a lot more besides. Once I had “adapted” it was fantastic, something really special. It’s almost a dessert. Cannot recommend too highly. It’s now easily in my top 5 favorites.

Batch M10
Dry grass and firewood on the nose. The palate is a beautiful range of flavors that remind me more of an herbal tea than what I normally think of with mezcal – lots of vanilla, ginger and winter spices that add to the warming quality of the alcohol.
This was my first experience with the Lagrimas de Dolores brand, and with Masparillo, and I’m eager to try more of both.

Lote: M-10 Bottle: 251/560
Nose – Creamy vanilla. Tiny bit of mint leaf. Light cottage cheese.

Palate – Complex, a lot going on and hard to pin down the plethora of flavors. Boba tea. Baked apple. All spice. Peppermint heat. Dry grass, Himalayan salt and vanilla latte in the finish that goes on for days. Pretty fantastic stuff!

Mezcalista Fabiola has created a masterpiece here. This mezcal tastes like a desert evening, just after sunset. It’s smooth, almost creamy, definitely vegetal, with a touch of citrus and maybe passionfruit that lingers like the warm rays of sun at twilight. Smoky: yes, but in that distant campfire sort of way, a nostalgic smoke the is present and yet not overwhelming. So far, this is my favorite mezcal by far. I’ll have to save my pennies for another bottle. Love: M-7, Bottle 118/450.

Lote M-10: My personal favourite from Lagrimas. Little minerality with a sweet vanilla taste coating the mouth before being swept away by a vegetal, ginger-like subdued spiciness thats gives away to a satisfying finish. Great work by Fabiola, a great maestra vinatera and a great person

An explosion of herbal, fruity and vegetal freshness at once, this mezcal. Light aroma of charred wood, some grassy herb and pineapple on the nose. Cucumber, water melon rinds, purple gooseberry; raw, green peppercorns, cedar or some aromatic hint of wood. A bit short aftertaste, but nevertheless a striking experience. Unlike all other Maximiliana I have tried. No batch, unfortunately

Lote M-7, botella 184/450

Very nice and milk chocolate-ty with a spine of unique, ripe maguey.
Starts out softer but ends long and a tiny bit dirty, in a good way. Truly delicious.
I’ll come back to this.

This is a very complex and smooth Mezcal.Sweet on the nose (reminds me of the taste of El Jolgorio Tobala, but on the nose), but tastes like an evolving sweet, then vegetal, then black pepperish adventure with a lingering “if drinking volcanic rocks was good” after tone. Definitely a stand out product to sip on.

Lote : 03
Bottle : 126
Nose : Very herbal and vegetal. Sweet vanilla, dusty and earthy.
Taste : Elegant yet complex. Caramelized agave and loads of vegetal notes.
Finish : Extremely present yet not too overwhelming, hardly any smoke. Perfect!
I could drink this stuff at any occasion…
