Lalocura Tepeztate

Lalocura Tepeztate is made by Eduardo Angeles, who got his start alongside his father, the late, great Don Lorenzo of Real Minero.

About this mezcal

Lalocura Tepeztate is made with 15 year old agave Tepeztate. The agave are cooked in an underground pit horno with encino wood, mashed by hand with wooden mallets, and fermented with open-air yeasts in cypress tanks. Distilled in small clay pots, this Tepeztate is different from most others you’ll find on the market as the clay pots soften the sharper notes, creating a more rounded and balanced experience.

Lalocura Mezcal

Before starting Lalocura in 2014, Eduardo “Lalo” Ángeles spent years working as the fourth generation master mezcalero of his family’s brand Real Minero, where he combined a lifetime of working under his father, the late, great Don Lorenzo with a collegiate degree in agricultural engineering. Many Real Minero bottles from several years ago actually have Eduardo listed alongside his father as the master distiller. Lalocura’s clay pot distilled mezcals have built a steady cult following over the last few years. People from around the world show up at the palenque in Santa Catarina Minas each day hoping to spend time listening to Lalo tell stories while they taste the 20+ expressions he has resting in glass at any given time. If you like clay pot distilled mezcal and you like Real Minero, it’s highly recommended that you find some Lalocura.

No Lote, March 2022
Purchased 250ml bottle in Oaxaca.
Butternut squash, sweet, vegetal. Warm fall flavors and fruit. Thanksgiving spices. Doesn’t taste like a Tep at all, but not that bad either so can’t dock it. 46% ABV.

Tried this at their palenque at 47%. Overly green, sweetness was artificial and the finish ethanol. Extremely disappointing. 😞

47.5% March 2019 batch

Bell peppers and other classic tep agave notes, yes, but also something savory like fresh white fish with a nutty lemon butter sauce. Papaya and maybe dragonfruit, with touches of green apple and cantaloupe too.

More nutty like brazil or macadamia, those lactic undertones. A little hot and dry on the finish, with more clay showing here.

Solid effort, nothing to go wild for at least IMHO. I’m glad to have tried it!

I met Lalo at his palenque today and sampled Tobasiche, Cuishe, Tobala and a 70/30 Tep/ Tobala in that order. The latter of which had fantastic Tep aroma on the nose, then a really soft flavor compared to some other in your face Teps. It was the winner in my book and the Tobasiche came in second. Super nice guy, proud of his work. He poured mezcal into my palm and had me rub it in my hands to feel the oilyness. He has probably 30 five gallon glass bottles of Mezcal in his house / store and made me a 1L bottle of the Tep on the spot, labeled it and then put heat shrink plastic around the neck of the bottle and the stopper. 47% March 2019.

I was less successful at Real Minero (his brothers’ palenque) up the road. May 10 is mother’s day in Mexico and they were closed for a big party.

Incredible Tepeztate mezcal distilled in clay. The clay provides a funky backdrop to the loud peppery green agave flavors. As others have noted, there are some notes of apples, cider vinegar, along with lemon rind. Very unique release. March 2019. 47.5% ABV.

Bought a 250mg bottle of this in the main market in Oaxaca City. May 2017. Reviewing after after having the bottle open for 5 months. Maybe my favorite Tepeztate, maybe because of the clay. Pretty light, notes of apples and pears. Hearing the price tag on Lalocura in the states is very high. Try to find his stuff if you find yourself in Oaxaca.

Pure Magic! I’ve tasted a couple batches of this now and it’s all been incredible. I’m not sure how often Tepextate is distilled in clay, but it apparently needs to happen more often. I was lucky enough to grab a 250ml bottle in Oaxaca (wish I’d bought more!). Now that other Lalo releases are available in the US, perhaps the Tepextate will be next. I have a batch from February 2017. It has some slight notes of wild apples, vinegar, and olives on the nose. Nothing overpowering, very light. The palate is sweet upfront with notes of ripe banana, lemon peel, mango, and melon. Those fruity flavors fade into notes of tanned leather and faint charcoal. This is really fantastic!
