About this sotol

Lamata Sotol Durango is a sotol made in El Mezquital, Durango, Mexico. Maestro Vinatero Chemino de la Cruz cooks the Dasylirion sotol in a conical underground oven, mashes the cooked sotol with an axe, ferments the plants in pine-wood tanks with spring water, and double distills in a traditional Durango style still with copper on the bottom and wood “Viejo” on top with a wooden arm going to a copper serpentine. Of the batches that have made it into the US thus far, each batch is around 40-50 liters.

Lamata

Lamata (formerly named Amormata) is the for-export label of Nacion de Las Verdes Matas, a small unregistered brand started by Luis Loya many years ago. His goal is to share mezcal from Northern Mexico from places that are under-represented in the market. Luis has relationships with producers in Durango, Nuevo Leon, Sonora, Chihuahua, San Luis Potosi and Tamaulipas among others.

The typical lot sizes of Amormata releases range from about 40 liters to 200 liters. The producers will continue to make about the same amount of spirits that they historically have in the past. Therefore, the brand will not bottle much more than a total of three to five thousand liters per year. Amormata is dedicated to promoting the “gusto historico”, the terroir, the liquid culture, and the history that is mezcal to people beyond the borders of the places where it is made.

ABV 48.5%

Nose: milk duds, wet clay, figs, tootsie roll, raisins, milk chocolate

Palate: less sweet than I expected on the palate. Earthy and mineral. Dried pineapple, some peanuts, mulch. Finish is cumin, chile cover mangos, a bit of cocoa and coffee

The nose made me expect a sweetness overload on the palate but damn did the palate hold its own. Nice chocolate and earth balanced. I’ve only had a few sotols and this is the best I’ve had by far. Awesome stuff.

This review is just an impression of a small pour from a big Lamata tasting. No bottle info. Will update if I try again.

Review #120: chocolate, caramel, earthy

This is just delicious with it’s sweet and savory notes with the earthy backbone.

SOT-C 10-06-2020
Nose: Unshucked corn – more the greenness of the ears and a slight sweetness from the fresh maize inside.

Palate: An initial black pepper heat but then quickly subsides to a floral sweetness. Very flowery! Also in the background is natural rubber and some of the corn I picked up in the nose.

This is my first ever sotol and I really enjoy it – tastes very well-crafted.

SOT-C 10-06-2020. Like digging your hands into wet forest earth after a rain. Dirt, wet leaves, cinnamon, leather, lime aid, and spearmint. Reminded me of the Maguey Melate Cucharillo. Just the kind of earthy complex Sotol that I love!
