Leyendas Mezcal

Mezcal de Leyendas (previously labeled as Mezcales de Leyenda) believes they can improve some of the most marginalized communities in Mexico. They implement the best fair trade practices where they work, and they have many efforts in agave sustainability. Their mezcals come from the different mezcal-producing states. They also have some special edition, small-batch mezcals. The brand also releases the Pelotón de la Muerte line of mezcals.

In 2021, the brand (under Artisanal Distillates, LLC) raised money via the StartEngine platform at a $32.7 million pre-money valuation.

Lote 21119. ? or L1119? This deserves a new page with Leo Hernandez as the producer, it’s an entirely different product than before. Minty and bright, with some nice dark sugar notes. Long pleasant mid-palate that starts sweet and ends dry and tannic. This is really delicious and it’s a shame the overall ranking is being dragged down by the former producer.

Sour but intriguing nose, bit of funk to it.
Palate is smooth, but light on flavour. A bit watery as others have said. Hint of citrus, salt, light smoke, but very flat. Not a sipper.

Lote: DLSL0019
Nose: BBQ-flavored potato chips. Sea salt. Raw sugar.

Palate: Extremely variable between sips:
1st pull – Almost nothing there – weak and watery. 42% ABV… what?
2nd pull – Pleasant upon entry – rubbery sweet. Then it all disappears again.
3rd pull – Very cool smoke flavor I can’t put my finger on. A sugar-laded funk in the background. Peppermint – more pepper than mint. Awesome sweet and salty finish.

I’m really glad I gave this a chance. It’s not mind-blowing but it definitely got much better. I’d say peak taste rating would be 3.5 stars but seeing as though a bottle of this is around $50 and it took some time to get there, I shaved off half a star.

Tried the more recent 50% version. Nice kick. Lots of brown sugar and agave. The notes have “hints lemon tea and fresh herbs” which I agree with. I think the previous reviews were for the 42% version. Mezcalero Leo Hernandez. Lot Li119. Bottle 1569/1620.

Watery, mild, weak, and overall bland…. some light smoke at the end. Yep, that’s it.

Meh. Not at all worth the price. Salt, citrus, and smoke… and that’s about it. Very flat and unappealing, and honestly too disjointed for use in cocktails.

Heavy duty citrus in this one – lemon peel/zest with saline and a smoky background. Not a bad sipper.

Last one from the sampler. Nice one to compare other agaves with but wasn’t blown away by this one.

Definitely saline with much of the classic mezcal smoke on the nose.

Edit: 2020 batch. Much better. Somewhat sweet roasted agave, green peppers, soft but warm. It’s got this saline quality still. Good texture and finish too. But this is far better than I recalled. A bit of peppermint on the end?

Salty and salty. Everything else is lost in this one.
