About this mezcal

Leyendas Puebla is made with maguey Tobalá (Agave potatorum), which is sustainably harvested from a semi-wild agave field in the northern valleys of the state of Puebla. The field is owned and operated by the Alva family. According to Leyenda, this is the largest field of sustainably cultivated agave Tobalá in Mexico. This mezcal is made by Don Aaron Valentin Alva Ibanez, who is a 4th generation mezcalero. His father, Don Federico, still helps him with many of the batches.

Leyendas Mezcal

Mezcal de Leyendas (previously labeled as Mezcales de Leyenda) believes they can improve some of the most marginalized communities in Mexico. They implement the best fair trade practices where they work, and they have many efforts in agave sustainability. Their mezcals come from the different mezcal-producing states. They also have some special edition, small-batch mezcals. The brand also releases the Pelotón de la Muerte line of mezcals.

In 2021, the brand (under Artisanal Distillates, LLC) raised money via the StartEngine platform at a $32.7 million pre-money valuation.

Almost fruity profile with very high toned notes. Unfortunately a little unbalanced and hot for my taste.

The flavors of Tobala seem to vary widely and I find them hit-or-miss. I enjoy this one. It is fruit-forward and rich.. “juicy fruit”. Papaya, under ripe bananas, and dried red apples. Some sourness on the finish. Overall worth a sip but don’t need a full bottle. Sample, no batch number.

Sweet aromas of green apples, unripe banana, starchy potatoes, and maraschino cherries. The palate has notes of apple turnover, brown sugar, rolled oats, and molasses. This is balanced and has some light perfumed tasting notes on the back of palate. This is solid.

My first expression from Puebla – hard to zero in on the profile but I picked up a very dry, grape leaf (dolmas), and lightly bitter. Reminds me of a Pisco almost. Not sure how to review this accurately as in the category of Tobalá I would say to look elsewhere as there are some wonderful options in this price range ($90-$100) but as a unique expression it is worth trying. I prefer the Durango from the Leyenda lineup although the profiles are dramatically different.

Nose is fun. Horse blanket mixed with citrus and grape must. Taste is completely different. Acrid, burnt wood, slight sweetness. Finish is wincing and harsh. I would have never guessed this was a tobala varietal if you would have asked me, blind.

Smell of botanicals, almost gin like without too much of the juniper. Granny smith apple, honeydew, slight salinity on the nose, pickling liquid. Slight aroma of sugar brulee. Very complex on the nose. Taste is consistent with the granny smith apple and the honeydew, with spicy notes on the back of the palate. You’re able to taste some brininess. Not too smooth. Medium finish. Overall it is a quite complex tobala, as it should be, but not your common Oaxacan Tobala, due to terroir. Very enjoyable.

Nose: Hard to put into words, but it reminds me of holidays in spain when I was little, Rich sweet floral smell, sun baked earth, new leather, sea salt, capers, vanilla, dried apricot, candied fruit, cream custard. I love this nose!

Taste: Full of tropical fruit, passion fruit, melon, mango, juniper berries, sweet potato, lime juice, sea water, grapefruit peel, black olives, dirty dusty leather.

Comments: I must have got a different batch to the other reviews, because I find this spirit to be amazing.
