About this mezcal

Leyendas San Luis Potosi is made with agave Salmiana, which is one of the few agave tough enough to survive in the rocky and arid lands of the central Potosino plateau. This agave is also known as agave Verde in San Luis Potosi, and it has a very unique flavor profile. It’s a huge agave that takes 7-10 years to reach maturity. The maestro mezcalero, Juan Jose Hernandez, comes from a long line of mezcal producers who have been producing at the hacienda where this mezcal is made for over 100 years. The agave for this mezcal are cooked for 48 hours in a clay oven that is traditional in this region. The agave is then milled and fermented with naturally occurring airborne yeasts for five days. Once fermented, it is distilled in a copper still.

Leyendas Mezcal

Mezcal de Leyendas (previously labeled as Mezcales de Leyenda) believes they can improve some of the most marginalized communities in Mexico. They implement the best fair trade practices where they work, and they have many efforts in agave sustainability. Their mezcals come from the different mezcal-producing states. They also have some special edition, small-batch mezcals. The brand also releases the Pelotón de la Muerte line of mezcals.

In 2021, the brand (under Artisanal Distillates, LLC) raised money via the StartEngine platform at a $32.7 million pre-money valuation.

My palate had a hard time with this one. I think I would like this one more if I was pairing it with some spicy food rather than just lined up in a flight. I’d try again.

LOTE: ISIL0118
Nose: Sweet, jarred mini onions. Anaheim peppers. Dryer sheets.

Palate: Subtle sweetness then the detergent notes kick in. Vegetal aspect is like the seedy, white placenta part of a green pepper. Soapy, cigarette aftertaste.

Tried the newer version in the Verde labelled bottle. Lots of green. Fresh salad bowl with some red wine vinegar dressing. Caramelized cherries on the finish. Enjoyable. Lot L1/19. 1620 bottles total. From Don Juan José ‘Che’ Hernández.

A soft, pretty example. There’s some nice candied citrus, light soft cheese, of course the classic jalepeno and other pepper tones, but with a velvety texture and gentle florality. Very approachable and a good example of the region!

Not my favorite from Leyenda. Strong smell of jalapeno, which is probably the best thing it has going for it. Some green olive and green on the taste. A bit watery for me, and frankly doesn’t seem too much to this one. 2.75. Lote: ISJL1119

Get a strong lemongrass and a bit floral flavour from this one. Not bad

Not for me at all. Smell is freaking awful… burnt jalapeno and green bean. Taste is the same. Id be furious if I bought a whole bottle. Gonna be tough to finish the one ounce pour i have now

is a great mezcal but they dont use oven clay. they use a big autoclave. her description on the website de mezcal says “horno de mamposteria” (oven clay). But, thats no true… however her agaves are silvestres.

pd. im from de san luis potosi 😉

This one is not smoky since the agave is cooked in clay ovens.
Notes of elderflower, lemon and jalapeno.
