About this mezcal

Los Javis Espadin is made with agave Espadin in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca. The agave used to make this mezcal were roasted in an underground oven, crushed by horse drawn tahona, fermented with open air yeasts, and double distilled in a copper pot still.

Los Javis Mezcal

Mezcal Los Javis is a family owned and operated distillery. Their palenque was built in Santiago Matatlan in 1979, and the Los Javis brand was founded in 2003 by Javier Mateo and his wife. The couple made a promise to plant and harvest the highest quality agave to create a mezcal of the finest variety. So fine that it would carry the family name, Javier, for three generations. Father, son, and grandson (all named Javier) began their journey when Javier Senior instilled in his family the quality and heritage of the mezcal making process.

Very little smoke. I was very disappointed. I’m new to drinking Mezcal and it’s very hard to find where I live. (Wichita, KS) Only $30ish bottle they had at this particular liquor store.I’m drawn to the smokiness which IMO is the only reason to pay the premium for Mezcal. Otherwise there’s plenty of good cheaper tequilas I would buy. Now I drive 25 min across town to get a bottle of Xicaru. I don’t get why you’d make Mezcal if it’s not smokey lol. 🤷‍♂️

Solid and good budget espadín. Nice bottle too. Ok to sip but with low ABV and rather low complexity I would use this for delicious drinks.
Tasted at Baja Bettys Agave club (San Diego) November 2021. Guillermo from Los Javis was wonderfully educating the club about the company and how to properly sip this espadín.

A great mezcal for new mezcal drinkers. Nice and light, delicate, fruity, cut grass and light smoke. Oaxacan and family owned 4th generation mezcalero, Javi Mateo makes some great mezcal.

Production Year: 2020, Batch: 58, Bottle: 1849 of 5520
Nose: Garden notes – growing green carrot tops – rather than sweet. Smoke is mild

Palate: Earthy – soil, stone and a bit of a white pepper kick. Sweetness is there in the background. At 42% it tastes like it could be a little higher ABV but still smooth (i.e. doesn’t taste watered down).

Great value sipper – got the bottle for $30. I’d buy it again.

Pleasant and mild – herbs, cucumber, and vaguely floral notes on the nose. Tastes rather thin and dry, with only a hint of sweetness, but finishes with a sudden peppery heat on the back of the throat that lingers for a while afterward. There is some smoke, but it’s buried pretty far back in the mix. I won’t call it unbalanced by any means, I certainly enjoy it. But those loving sweeter components and/or smoke, like me, will not find either in any abundance here.
